Introduction ● Rock Art documents ancient cultures around the world. ● Many digital libraries collect images and descriptions of this rock art. ● However, there is no link between archive and art when a visitor visits an actual site. 2
Example of Rock Art 3
The Goal ● A visitor to the site takes a picture with a phone camera. ● An application on the phone then tells her exactly what she is looking at. ○ Maybe with a list of probable candidates, like a search engine. ● Create a link from the archive to the physical to support education. 4
Methodology ● Use feature extraction algorithms to convert images to key attributes: ○ SIFT, SURF, FAST ● Use information retrieval algorithms to perform a fast search operation on a mobile device. 5
Current Status ● SIFT works well to find key attributes on a phone. ● Search indexing algorithms are being optimized. ● We can already find the correct image within a specific site. ● ...but we can do better! 6
Future Work ● Formal evaluation of application on mobile phone. ● Testing and possible deployment in the field, in collaboration with Department of Archaeology at UCT. 7
