Belongings/Toys o Please make sure that all items that your child brings to school are clearly labeled (backpacks, coats, sweaters, lunchboxes, etc.) o Please leave all toys at home, as these items tend to get lost or broken. o Pokémon Cards and Fidget Spinners are no not allowed in our classroom. o Children will have a special time to share a toy while they are Star Student, so please hold off on sending toys in prior to their week. o I encourage students to bring a PL PLASTIC TIC water bottle to have on his or desk.
Birthdays o Birthdays are very special in Room 203! We celebrate your child with a birthday song and bookmark. o According to LCPS food policy, no food is allowed to be brought in and shared in the classroom. o Students are welcome to distribute invitations to a birthday party ONL NLY if they are inviting EV EVERY ERY student in Room 203.

Communication: Dismissal Changes/Absences o If you are changing your child’s after-school arrangements, please send in a note or call the office in a timely manner. o In addition to a note or phone call, please email dis-absentee@lcps.org and myself at meredith.miller@lcps.org to confirm the details of the arrangement. o If your child will be absent due to an appointment or family trip, please inform me as soon as possible.
Homework o In 2 nd grade, the primary homework for students will be Word Study. o Students will learn sorts from assigned teacher each Friday. Teacher will send students home with sort and test on them the following Friday. o Practice words with your child using suggested exercises at least 3 times a week and log your practice in the Homework Log. o Keep Homework Logs in yellow Take Home Folders and I will check/initial the logs weekly. o Read 20 minutes every night. Completion of reading will be checked through “Status of the Class.” o Reflex Math – must ust sign Discovery’s Parent Consent Form o An online tool for children to use in order to become fluent in basic addition and subtraction facts. o Use of Reflex (20 minutes, 2 times a week) will also count as a grade on report cards under “Addition and Subtraction Facts.”

Star Student o Each week, Room 203 will celebrate a Star Student. o When your child is selected as the Star Student, a letter will be sent home the Friday before, which will detail the special events of the upcoming week. o “All About Me Poster” (typically) due on Mondays.
Technology o All classrooms at Discovery have own set of specific devices o We will use the devices for academic purposes only: Raz Kids, Reflex Math, Google Classroom, Genius Hour etc. o We wi will ll not be be using de device ces fo for the fi first fe few w we weeks ks of f sc school ool . Volunteers o Room M Mom/Dad: This entails planning class parties and communicating to the class families about school and class events. o Administrative H Help: : Second grade is full of hands on activities. I will need some parents to cut out lamination, put together packets, make examples for us to use, etc. I will send out emails throughout the year looking for volunteers who are willing to do some of these jobs when needed (at home or at school). o Classroom A Activities: I will need help to organize/supervise various events throughout the year. These jobs may include chaperoning a group of children or running a station at a party.
