  6. WAIT, WHAT JUST HAPPENED? • 1 in 5 children have mental health problems • 43% increase in ADHD • 37% increase in teen depression • 200% increase in suicide rate ages 10-14 • Surges in incidents of cutting, break down in relationships, gaming addiction, sedentary lifestyle • A lack of correspondence in increased mental health treatment...meaning a growing number of kids who need help are not receiving it.

  7. HOW TEENS USE SOCIAL MEDIA IN HEALTHY WAYS • RARELY HAS AN ACTIVE PRESENCE ON THEIR FEEDS • POSTS FEW PHOTOS AND MAKES FEW COMMENTS • HE OR SHE CAN DO HOMEWORK WITHOUT CHECKING IN • VERY ACTIVE WITH DIFFERENT FRIEND GROUPS AND HAVE FACE-TO-FACE CONNECTIONS • MAINTAINS STRONG PERSONAL RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILY MEMBERS

  8. INSTAGRAM • Kids can purchase Instagram followers at “instabuygram.com” • $4.95 for 500 followers • Why? Kids are measuring their popularity with their friend count • TO DO: Make sure the “Add to Photo Map” is turned off. Otherwise, via the GPS technology, strangers can see exactly where a photo was taken, all the way down to the house! * Finstagram accounts are “False Instagram” accounts, usually created for the purpose of avoiding parental monitoring.

  9. KIK (AGE 17+) • Private instant messaging app • Lack of privacy controls or parental controls • Perfect place for pedophiles to obtain pictures • Check out user reviews - Large % use for sexting • Pedophiles will often start on Instagram and then ask to KIK someone • Easy to pretend to be someone you are not • No records for parents to review. Chats are easily deleted. • TO DO: Delete this App from your child’s account.

  10. • • Completely Anonymous • Private chat site for video or text. • Site matches who you chat with based on what you want to talk about. • Popular among teens looking for someone who shares the same interests. • Video chats have been located on the computers of predators. • TO DO: Delete this App from your child’s account.

  11. SNAPCHAT • lets you send texts, pictures, and videos that you program to disappear after a few seconds. • The fact that the messages don't last makes texting feel like a game, and it offers a sense of freedom: On the other hand, they may be tempted to share sexy images, thinking the pics will go away. • It's not true that Snapchats go away forever. Data is data: Whenever anything is sent online, it never truly goes away. (For example, the person on the receiving end can easily take a screenshot of the image before it disappears.) Snapchats can even be recovered -- unaffiliated third-party services such as Snapsaved (which was recently hacked) give users the chance to save any Snapchatted pic. Also, users can pay to view Snaps multiple times. • “My Eyes Only” is a hidden feature within the app where users can store private images behind a locked screen.

  12. SO WHAT ARE THEY DOING ONLINE? • Lurking= viewing social media feeds without posting • A full-time, STRESSFUL job for teens, checking in over 200 times a day • Liking/Commenting/Posting- tying their self-worth directly to a thumbs up icon • Constant Comparison • Easily leads to unintentional (or intentional) bullying • FOMO= Fear of Missing Out leads to anxiety and depression • Causes one to be in a hyper-vigilant state and never allows brain to rest • Creates constant state of distraction, preventing any sort of deep thinking

  13. SOCIAL MEDIA WARNING SIGNS- DOES YOUR TEENAGER…. • Talk about the social media world all the time • Share more online than they do in person • Need to have their phone while doing homework • Care about what happens online over what happens in real life • Argue with parents over time limits • Ignore sibling relationships • Mention feeling left out • Take their phone to bed • Hide their accounts and passwords from you • Follow people they have never met • Obsess over taking the perfect selfie

  14. THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA: SEXTORTION • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Wxt9YdyblUU • 82% of ONLINE SEX CRIMES against minors started when the perpetrator used the victim’s social networking site to gain information and introduction

  15. THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA: CYBERBULLYING • Harrassment: intimidation or aggressive pressure. Social media is the perfect outlet for this because it is easy to do it anonymously. Cyberstalking is a form. • Exclusion: when a group of friends excludes, or even gangs up, on you. Plants seeds of doubting self-worth • Outing: When a “friend” shares personal/private info about you.

  16. THE DARK SIDE OF SOCIAL MEDIA: SEXTING • Children with smartphones are 100% more likely to view porn than those without one • Sexting is the practice of using a data phone or social media to distribute nude and/or explicit photos of oneself to another person or groups of people. • Todays teens think this is a normal activity because it is so common • Dangers: Teenage relationships do not last forever, and once ties are cut the teen who sent the image no longer has control of where it goes. • In Kansas, it is illegal to possess or transfer child pornography of children under the age of 16. You could be charged and added to the state’s sex offender registry for having sexually based pictures of yourself or others on your phone. • FACT: 1 in 3 boys have received sexually suggestive content via a device • FACT: 1 in 5 teens have sent nude photos of themselves • FACT: 22% of girls and 18% of boys have SENT sexually suggestive content • KIDS NEED TO KNOW: A person’s social media footprint is extremely difficult and costly to erase

  17. STEP 1- LEAD BY EXAMPLE • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6rgNz7TFsE0

  18. NOW THAT WE KNOW, HOW CAN WE DO BETTER? • Common Sense Media: 6 Media Resolutions for your family 1- Commit to learning about one media item your kid is passionate about 2- Choose one night of the week to share youtube videos with each other 3- Deal with the one thing that’s most frustrating about your kids’s tech life 4- Live by example by putting down your phone at a certain time each evening 5- Device-free dinners 6- Read books with your kids *Other ideas: make sure you have all your child’s passwords, check devices randomly, only put social media on desktop devices, put time limits/safe zones in place, plan more face-to-face time with your child’s friends

  19. OUR BEST SHOT: EACH OTHER • REDUCE PRESSURE • PLAN SCREEN-FREE EVENTS TOGETHER • REPLACE FALSE CONNECTIONS with TRUE CONNECTIONS • TANTRUMS are real…but after the storm , many teens report feeling much happier. Less stress, better self- esteem…and parents do too. • This will be COSTLY to us as parents, but it would be even MORE COSTLY to look away at this moment when they need you the most. • OVER 2,300 parents in KC are having this discussion on FB at “Wait a Bit Kansas City”
