Ark Swift Presentation Policy Aims To establish high expectations and pride in everything we do – both of ourselves and of the children. To create a clear and consistent set of guidelines for the presentation of children ’ s learning. Objectives • To motivate each individual to present their work in the best possible way. • To enable children to recognise work that is presented to a high standard. • To ensure each child knows the standard of presentation that is expected of them. Expectations for Staff Staff are expected to act as role models to children and as such should have high expectations for their own presentation. This includes: All handwriting which is on display for the children – on the interactive whiteboard, books, flip • charts, display – should be legible, consistently formed and neat. It should be joined from Year 2 and upwards. • Care should be taken about the use of mini whiteboards; whilst useful for effective formative assessment, extended use, especially for longer pieces of writing is not to be promoted. • All feedback on children ’ s work should be in clear, legible handwriting. • When sticking work/labels/headings in books ensure they are straight and cut to size. • If a child is away please ensure that their book is marked with ‘absent’ and write the date and Learning Objective. Expectations for Children Use of pencils and pens • Pencils should always be sharp when used. • Pencils should be used in all maths books. • Pens should be used for written work as soon as possible from Year 3 onwards at the point where the child ’ s handwriting is deemed to be sufficiently neat and fluent to be awarded a handwriting licence. • Handwriting licenses will be awarded by the phase leader or literacy coordinator after recommendation from the class teacher. To be considered, children should demonstrate: - a joined handwriting style - consistent use of this style across all books. • Pens must be the black handwriting pens obtained from school stores. • Felt pens should not be used in exercise books for underlining or illustrations although they can be used on paper at the teacher ’ s discretion. Expectations for Handwriting • Children and teachers should use the approaches outlined in the handwriting policy.
Expectations for Layout • Start new work on a fresh page. • The date is to be written at the top of the page on the right and should be underlined with a pencil and ruler. The format of the date is: - In all books apart from numeracy: 17th September 2014 - In numeracy: 17/9/14 • In years R, 1 and 2, the learning objective (LO) should be stuck in. Text should be typed in Arial font, size 12 and should not be underlined. • In years 3 and above, the LO should be written as ‘ LO: ’ • The LO should be written/stuck on the line underneath the date, on the left and against the margin. It should not be underlined. • Success criteria should be typed using the format below and should be stuck in directly below the LO. The same format is to be used for all year groups. Success Criteria (I can Staff (tick or traffic light) Child (tick or traffic light) statements etc.) • Miss a line under the LO/success criteria and start at the margin. • Leave one line between each paragraph but other than this, write on each line. • In Key Stage 2, mistakes should be corrected by drawing one neat line through the mistake and starting again – mistakes should not be erased or over-written. • In Key Stage 1, the same principle is to be encouraged by staff but if necessary, staff can use an eraser to rub out repeated mistakes. Layout in Mathematics (in addition to the above) • Each page must have a margin 2 squares wide and be drawn on the left hand side with a ruler and pencil. If appropriate pages can be divided into two with a ruled line and a margin of 2 squares to the right of it. • All figures must be written neatly and clearly in accordance with the school ’ s handwriting policy. • One figure should be written in each square. • Each calculation must be clearly numbered with the number in the margin to distinguish it from working figures. There should be at least one clear square between each calculation, both horizontally and vertically. For solving word problems the actual sum should be set out. The answer should be written in a sentence where it clarifies a complex problem or where the focus is on maths vocabulary. Please see the ‘ Written Calculations Policy ’ for further guidance. • When using formal written methods, the answer should have ruler lines above and below an answer with the operation sign to the left or right in a separate column. • Calculations involving decimals should see the point written in the centre of the square between the squares used for the units and tenths digits. I.e.: ∙ 1 2
Monitoring of Presentation Policy The Academy calendar and/or monitoring timeline will set out opportunities for the formal monitoring of presentation in children ’ s books. Such monitoring will be used to: • Identify best practice • Support and challenge staff and children to ensure the highest possible standards of presentation • Identify any areas for Academy or phase improvement planning. In addition, informal monitoring will take place throughout the year to ensure best practice. Appendices Poster/handout for children Pen license template
