Developmental Mathematics: Should It Stay or Should It Go? Christina Lecturer Department of Mathematics and Statistics Northern Arizona University
Developmental Mathematics |Introduction • Also known as Remedial Mathematics • Designed to develop math skills of students who are deemed underprepared for college-level mathematics courses. • Courses offered differ from one institution to another. • How? One common measure: Placement test • For students, this is a setback!!
Developmental Mathematics |Who?? United States Department of Education reported that in 2010-2011, ≈ 35% of students took at least one developmental course upon their entry into the higher education. 4-year institution: ≈ 66% black ≈ 52% Low income ≈ 53% hispanic ≈ 33% High income ≈ 36% white Chen (2016)
Developmental Mathematics |What happened? NCES (2016) reported at public 4-year institutions: Completed: 59% of students Some: 25% of students None: 15%-16% of students
Developmental Mathematics |What happened? NCES (2016) reported 6-year persistence and attainment:
Developmental Mathematics |Now What?? • Does it help students succeed in college? • Should we reform remediation? • Different pathways • Compress (co-requisite) courses • Acceleration model • Etc… • Utilize multiple measure for placement? • Do they need the class? Should we remove it all together?
Northern Arizona University |NAU Flagstaff, AZ Undergraduate Total = 26,513 • FT 21,731 • PT 4,782 https://in.nau.edu/Institutional-Research/Quick-Facts/
Northern Arizona University |Math Placement All students are required to have math placement before enrolling in NAU mathematics and statistics classes in order to foster a positive learning opportunity and maximize the likelihood of student success. Math placement can be determined from: • A combination of 4 years of the appropriate high school math classes (high school graduates Spring 2015 or later) • SAT or ACT math subscores (dated August 2012 or later) • AP exam credit, • or college transfer math credits. If a student has no math placement, the student must take the NAU Math Placement Test to establish their placement. https://in.nau.edu/math-placement/
Northern Arizona University |Math Placement Eligible Courses: MAT100 (Mathematics Pathway) MAT108 (Algebra for Precalculus) MAT114 (Quantitative Reasoning) – Foundation requirement MAT150 (Principal of Mathematics I) MAT121 (Finite Mathematics with Calculus) – business major MAT125 (Precalculus Mathematics) STA270 (Applied Statistics)
Northern Arizona University |Keep MAT 100?? MAT 100 (Mathematics Pathway) – 2 credit hours Pass/Fail course Ø Mastery-based learning Ø (modified) Emporium model – Lumberjack Mathematics Center Ø Pearson (MyMathLab) Fall 2012 – Spring 2018: Passing rate for MAT 100 varies from 46% - 70%. Average passing rate per semester: ≈ 60%
Northern Arizona University |Reform it! Ø Mastery-based learning with Adaptive and Personalized Learning Ø (modified) Emporium model – Lumberjack Mathematics Center Ø McGraw-Hill (ALEKS) Since Fall 2018: Passing rate for MAT 100 varies from 79.5% - 90%. Average passing rate per semester (so far): ≈ 85% 🙍
Northern Arizona University |What if…? What if we let it go ??
Northern Arizona University |Let it go… MAT100 (Mathematics Pathway) – REMOVED!!!! MAT108 (Algebra for Precalculus) Ø 3 credit hours Letter Grade course Ø Only considered as an elective course and does not fulfill any major requirement for mathematics Ø (modified) Emporium model – Lumberjack Mathematics Center • 75 minutes Class & 120 minutes in Lab Ø Pearson (MyMathLab/MyLabsPlus)
Northern Arizona University |Let it go… MAT100 (Mathematics Pathway) – REMOVED!!!! MAT108 (Algebra for Precalculus) Fall 2018 : ≈ 100 students enrolled in co-requisite model. • Enrolled in a regular MAT 108 • Enrolled in a supplemental 1-credit course Average passing rate for MAT 108: 72% Passing rate for the co-requisite students: 62%
