Theory of Change
What is Theory of Change? • Logical framework to set out how you will fulfil programme goals or your overall mission • Resources -> Activities -> Immediate impacts -> Long-term impacts • Useful guides available from NPC and Nesta • It can help with defining: • what you need to do to achieve your goals, helps lateral thinking and identifying gaps and opportunities • what you don’t do, and where you need partnerships • what your impact is and how you could measure it • In doing so, it also helps with: • building whole team understanding and concensus internally -> strategy & business planning • communicating your CF externally – present and/or future • building confidence in your CF
Theory of Change for Funders - NPC • Impact on grantees • ‘funder - plus’ activity • easier to attribute your impact • Impact on beneficiaries e.g. disadvantaged children and young people, older people in cold homes • narrowly defined goal, programme or fund specific • often difficult to set out intermediate outcomes • can be designed collaboratively with grantees • Impact on a social problem e.g. social mobility, fuel poverty • Where a funder adopts a more complex range of tools to address a problem – funding, research, convening, partnerships • Helps define who to work with, what CF role is and what to measure
