  2. Sustainability Defined There are many “definitions” for sustainability, the easiest way to think about it is: Sustainability is the capacity to endure. The Brundtland Commission says: "meets the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs.” Simpler yet: Sustainability is the ability to continue a defined behavior indefinitely. All these mean the same thing - who is your audience???

Sustainability • Sustainability has different meanings and drivers dependent on the audience • Mission – Environment – Community – Business….. • You must target to your audience - their value proposition and their areas of interest and concern • The project manager with a limited budget may not care about the socio/community impact • The CFO is looking at the budget in 1/2-5 years increments • The facility manager is about todays’ emergency and tomorrows needs • So sustainable practices need to be incorporated into existing processes so that it becomes a given not a burden.

Incorporating Sustainability • Push the envelope of business as usual thru the sustainability lens . • Design and Plan to requirements, outcomes and goals - drive innovation and use of sustainable resources. – Design to Outcomes and Goals not metrics. – Use the opportunity side of risk for the design process using Sustainable Engineering, Chemistry, Energy Management…

  7. Challenge – Changing Perception • Sustainability is about effective program and project management and operations - not compliance - although compliance is usually achieved. • Understanding the program/project goals, the desired sustainable outcome forces innovation . • Remember your organization has to find value in the proposition. • Has to be a win-win-win.
