  1. #SundayGathering with Shaykh Omar Khan Series 2: Al- Malaa’ikah – The Angels 07/04/19 – Sayyiduna Mika’il (Peace be upon Him) www.SundayGathering.co.uk /AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com

  2. His Name Ibn al-Mundhir narrates from ʿIkrimah that the name of Jibrīl is ʿAbdullah (“servant of Allah”) and the name of Mīkāʿīl (peace be upon him) is ʿUbayd’ullah (“small servant of Allah”) . There are varying pronunciations of the name of Sayyiduna Mīkāʿīl as mentioned in the works of tafāsīr (exegeses) such as Tafsīr al- Bayḍāwī . Nāfi’ pronounced it as Mīkā’il لئاكيم (with a yā rather than hamzah and without elongation of the yā ). Another pronunciation is Mīkāl لاكيم which is the pronunciation of the people of Ḥijāz and this is how the name is pronounced when reciting the Holy Qur’an according to the recitation ( qirā’ah ) of al- Hafṣ as narrated by ʿ Āṣim . Many others pronounce this word as Mīkāʿīl ليئاكيم with a hamzah before an elongated yā . There are other pronunciations as well.

  3. His love & respect for Sayyiduna Jibrīl Al- Ḥakīm at- Tirmidhī narrates in Nawādir al- ‘Uṣūl from Zayd Ibn Rafīʾ who stated that Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl entered upon Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) whilst he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was performing siwāk . The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave the siwāk to Jibrīl (peace be upon him). Jibrīl (peace be upon him) said to start with the elder first. Al- Ḥakīm at- Tirmidhī explained that this indicated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) should give the siwāk to Mīkāʿīl as he was older.

  4. Representative of the Best of Creation In ad-Durr al- Manthūr , al-Imam Jalāl al- Dīn al- Suyūṭī (d. 911) mentions a narration of al- Ḥākim (d. 405) who narrates from Sayyiduna Abu Saʿīd (Allah be pleased with him) that Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “My representatives in the heavens are Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl and my representatives on the Earth are Abu Bakr and ʿUmar . ” Similarly al- Bazzār , aṭ - Ṭabarānī, Abu Nuʿaym in Ḥ ilya narrate from Sayyiduna Ibn ʿAbbās (Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Indeed Allah assisted me through four representatives – two from the dwellers of the heavens; Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl, and two from the dwellers of the earth; Abu Bakr and ʿUmar .

  5. His Duties Al- Bayhaqī (d. 458) narrates in Shuʿab al- īmān from Ibn Thābit that Sayyiduna Jibrīl (peace be upon him) has been given control over armies and winds whilst Sayyiduna Mīkāʿīl (peace be upon him) has been given control over the rain and vegetation. Khālid Ibn Abī ʿImrān narrates that Jibrīl is the trustworthy one sent to Allah’s Messengers and Mīkāʿīl takes the book of deeds which rises to the skies — al- Haba’ik fi akhbar al- mala’ik . In a long narration of ʿ Ikrimah Ibn Khālid it is mentioned that Sayyiduna Jibrīl (peace be upon him) said to Allah’s Messenger in relation to the most noble of angels that Jibrīl is Ṣāḥib al- ḥarb (the angel who would assist the believers in the battlefields) and Ṣāḥib al- Mursalīn (the angel who was the Companion of the Messengers) whilst Mīkāʿīl is the angel who is in charge of every drop that flows, every leaf that grows and every leaf that withers.

  6. Prophetic Supplication ( du ʿ ā ) There is a narration of Majmaʾ al- zawā’id which is also narrated by aṭ - Ṭabarānī and al- Ḥākim from Abi’l Malīḥ who narrates from his father that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed two light rakʿahs (“units”) of Fajr and then supplicated three times, رانلا نم كب ذوعأ دمحمو ليفارسإو ليئاكيمو ليربج بر مهللا “O Allah, O Lord of Jibrīl, Mīkāʿīl , Isr ā f ī l and Muhammad! I seek refuge with you from the fire. ”

  7. Enemy of Jibrīl is an enemy of Mīkāʿīl “Whoever is an enemy to Allah, and His Angels and His Noble Messengers, and Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl– then (know that), Allah is an enemy of the disbelievers. ” — Surah al- Baqarah , (“The Cow”), 2: 98. Al-imam Fakhr al- Dīn al- Rāzī (d. 606) mentions a question that arises in relation to the above verse which is that the angels are already mentioned, then what need was there to mention the angels Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl specifically? al- Rāzī states that one answer for this is that these two angels have been specifically mentioned because of their virtue which makes them a special type separate to the angels. Another reason is that the discussion between the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and the Jews at that time was in relation to these two angels as the Jews perceived Angel Jibrīl (peace be upon him) to be their enemy and Angel Mīkāʿīl (peace be upon him) to be their supporter. ( al- Tafsīr al- kabīr ) • Jibrīl is more virtuous than Mīkāʿīl, while both of them are more superior than the remainder of the angels. • The love of Mīkāʿīl cannot be present along with enmity towards Jibrīl as their duties are linked and enmity towards one of them therefore necessitates enmity towards the other. ( al- Tafsīr al- Naʿīmī )

  8. With the Beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) It is narrated in Ṣaḥīḥ Muslim (Bk. Of Virtues, b āb fī qitāli Jibr ī l wa Mīkāʿīl ), from Saʿd who said, “ On the day of Uḥud, I saw two men on the right and left of Allah’s Messenger (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) who were wearing white clothes; and I had not seen them before nor after [this] – (they were) Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl (upon them be peace).

  9. The Seven Styles of Recitation Al-imam Ahmad narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stated, “Jibrīl and Mīkāʿīl (peace be upon them both) came to me and Jibrīl said, “Recite the Qur’an upon one style. ” Mīkāʿīl said, “Increase it. ” So Jibrīl said, “Recite upon seven styles. ””

  10. Fear of Allah Most High Al-Imam Ahmad narrates from Anas b. Mālik (Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to Jibrīl , “ Why is it that I have never seen Mīkāʿīl laughing?” Jibrīl replied, “Mīkāʿīl has not laughed since the fire (of hell) was created. ”
