  1. #SundayGathering with Shaykh Omar Khan A glimpse from the lives of the Prophets of Allah (Peace and Blessings be upon Them all) 17/02/19 – Sayyiduna Ayyub (Peace be upon Him) www.SundayGathering.co.uk /AlMuhammadiyya | www.Al-Muhammadiyya.com

  2. Sayyiduna Ayyub’s Lineage • The father of Sayyiduna Ayyub was Moos who was the grandson of Sayyiduna Ishaq as the name of Amoodh’s father was ‘ Ais. • The wife of Sayyiduna Ayyub was called Rahmah and she was the daughter of Afraaeem, the son of Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him)

  3. The beautiful attributes of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) • Sayyiduna Ayyub had curly hair, vast eyes and had a beautiful complexion. He had a wide chest and strong arms and thighs. Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) was tall. • Sayyiduna Ayyub(peace be upon him) was compassionate towards the poor, he would take care of the orphans, assist the widows and he would welcome guests with honour and respect. At Tafseer Al Kabeer

  4. The abundance of wealth and children • Allah the Almighty granted Sayyiduna Ayyub a huge amount of wealth prior to his test. • Sayyiduna Ayyub was blessed with all different types of wealth – land, animals and servants. • Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) had seven daughters and seven sons. Ruh ul Ma’ani

  5. The Test • Allah the Almighty firstly tested Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) with tranquillity, health, wealth and children. Sayyiduna Ayyub passed this test successfully by expressing gratitude upon these blessings. • The test of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) ensued as a natural fire from under the ground burned the gardens, crops, camels and sheep etc. to ashes. When Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was informed of this, he stated that this wealth belonged to Allah which He had granted him. Allah was the true Owner of the wealth and therefore Allah the Almighty could remove this wealth whenever he wished. • Sayyiduna Ayyub’s children were in one house. An earthquake caused the house to collapse and all the children passed away. Even when facing this huge calamity, Sayyiduna Ayyub held onto patience and stated that everything belongs to Allah and he was content with the Decree of Allah Almighty.

  6. Illness • Severe heat in the blessed body of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) led to it seeming that there was fire burning within. Sayyiduna Ayyub’s blessed body was covered with blisters from his blessed head to his blessed feet. • Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) suffered from a painful rash which caused his blessed nails to fall. Sayyiduna Ayyub would scratch his body with bricks and stones. • Sayyiduna Ayyub’s body (apart from his eyes, heart and tongue) were covered with insects. Ibn Asaakir stated, ‘Insects would fall from the body of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) and he would return them on the body stating, “Consume the provision granted to you by Allah.” • It should be noted that Al Imam Al Qurtubi (Allah shower mercy upon him) stated that the narration in relation to insects arriving on the blessed body of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) is in need of an authentic chain of narrators and that he did not believe that this narration is established from authentic sources. However Al Imam Al Aaloosi Al Baghdadi (Allah shower mercy upon him) has proven this narration from authentic sources. He mentions that Al Imam Ahmad Ibn Hanbal has narrated in ‘ Kitaab uz Zuhd ’ that insects would roam around the body of Sayyiduna Ayyub apart from his eyes, heart and tongue which remained free from this affliction. Furthermore Al Imam Al Aaloosi Al Baghdadi mentions from Ibn ‘ Asaakir and Abu Nu’aim that insects would fall from the body of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) and he would return them on the body stating, “Consume the provision granted to you by Allah.” Ruh ul Ma’ani • The narrations establishing the insects roaming around the blessed body of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) are mentioned in At Tafseer Al Baidhawi, At Tafseer Al Baghawi, At Tafseer Al Mazhari and At Tafseer Al Kabeer as well as other works of Tafseer (exegesis).

  7. The assistance of Sayyiduna Ayyub’s wife • When Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) was in more severe pain, his relatives all left him. They made a hut outside the city so that the illness would not spread to others. When everybody else fled, Sayyiduna Ayyub’s wife, Rahmah Bint Afraaeem Ibn Yusuf remained with Sayyiduna Ayyub. She continued to serve Sayyiduna Ayyub and she ensured that all the domestic necessities were fulfilled. This was the piety of the granddaughter of Allah’s Prophet, Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him).

  8. The Patience of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) • The pious, dedicated and loyal wife stated in the Court of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him), “If only you supplicate in the Court of Allah the Almighty, Allah will remove your difficulties. When Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) heard this, he said, “How long was the time of ease and happiness?” She mentioned a long amount of time in response. In one narration, it is stated that she replied that it was eighty years. Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) stated, “I feel ashamed to supplicate in the Court of Allah when the time of my test has not equated the time of my ease.” Ruh ul Ma’ani

  9. Unhappiness with an omission by Sayyiduna Ayyub’s pious wife • Some scholars have stated that Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) was displeased with his wife when she arrived late after Sayyiduna Ayyub had called her. • These scholars state that this displeasure may have been due to the discomfort that comes into one’s nature when extremely ill. • Other scholars have stated that Sayyiduna Ayyub’s wife was approached by satan who came in the form of a doctor. Satan stated that her husband was in extreme pain and if she wished, he would give her some medicine for Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) and that Sayyiduna Ayyub would become healthy after taking that medicine. When Sayyiduna Ayyub would regain health he would have to express gratitude to this “doctor” with the following words, “You granted me cure.” • Sayyiduna Ayyub’s wife did not realise that this was a deception by satan. Therefore she felt that it was very easy to act upon this method in order for Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) to regain good health. • When Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) was informed by his wife of this discussion, Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) realised that satan was trying to cause failure in the test. • Sayyiduna Ayyub was upset with his wife and he said to her, “If I become healthy I will strike you with one hundred lashes. I will not eat anything you cook.” Ruh ul Ma’ani • This is why Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) said, “The devil has struck me with hardship and pain.” Surah As Saad 38:41

  10. Alleviation of the affliction • ‘And remember Ayyub, when he called his Lord that, “Hardship has afflicted me, and You are the Most Merciful of all those who have mercy. ” We therefore heard his prayer and removed the adversity that had afflicted him, and We gave him his family and in addition bestowed along with them a similar number, by Mercy from Ourselves – and an advice for the people who worship. ” Surah Al Ambiyaa 21: 83-84

  11. Sayyiduna Ayyub’s humble method of supplication • Sayyiduna Ayyub supplicated by calling out to the Mercy of Allah mentioning his Lord as being the Most Merciful without mentioning what he desired.

  12. The Spring of Cure • ‘We said to him, “Strike the Earth with your foot; this cool spring is for bathing and drinking.” Surah Saad 38:42 • Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) was commanded to strike his foot on the ground, to drink from it and bathe using the water. When Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) bathed with the water, he was cured from all external physical illnesses. When he drank the water, he was cured from all internal illnesses. • When Sayyiduna Ayyub’s wife entered, she did not recognise him. She asked, “O Bondsman of Allah! There was an ill person here. Where has he gone?”She asked continuously whilst fearing for Sayyiduna Ayyub’s welfare. Sayyiduna Ayyub said to her, “Allah shower mercy on you. I am Ayyub. Allah has granted cure to me. ”

  13. The children and wealth of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) returned to him • It is mentioned in Ruh ul Ma’ani with reference to Al Bahr ul Muheet that the majority of Tafseer (exegesis) scholars state that Allah the Almighty gave life to those who had passed away from the family of Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him), granted health to the ill and reunited those of them who had dispersed. • Some scholars of Tafseer state that Allah the Almighty granted youth to Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) and granted him children similar to the children he previously had. • Allah the Almighty once again granted Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) abundant wealth. • ‘And We bestowed his household to him and one more similar to it – as a mercy from Us, and as a remembrance for the people of intellect. ’ Surah Saad 38:43

  14. Fulfilment of the oath • ‘And We said, “Take a broom in your hand and strike her with it and do not break your vow; ” We indeed found him patiently enduring ; what an excellent bondman! He is indeed most inclined. ” Surah Saad 38:44 • This was the blessing of Allah upon Sayyiduna Ayyub (peace be upon him) that his oath was fulfilled in this way.
