The fulfilment of Command without heed to pleas • Sa’eed Ibn Mansoor and Ibn ul Mundhir narrate from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (Allah be pleased with him) that Allah the Almighty sent an Angel from those who carry the ‘ Arsh (Throne) to the earth to collect clay when He decreed to create Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him). When the Angel intended to take from it, the earth said, “I ask you through the sake of the One Who sent you that you do not take from me anything on this day which the fire will have a share from tomorrow. So the Angel left it. When the Angel entered the Court of the Almighty, Allah the Almighty said to the Angel, “What prevented you from bringing that which I commanded you to bring?” The Angel replied, “It asked me through Your Sake. Therefore it was difficult for me to reject anything requested for Your Sake. ” Allah the Almighty sent another Angel with whom a similar situation occurred. To the extent that Allah the Almighty sent them all. Then Allah the Almighty sent the Angel of death to whom the earth said the same thing. The Angel of death replied, “Indeed the One Who sent me has more right to be obeyed. So the Angel of death took soil from the surface of the earth – clean soil and unclean soil. ” So he took it in the Court of the Almighty and he poured upon it from the water of Jannah (Paradise). Thereafter it became black mud with odour. Thus Adam (peace be upon him) was created from it. • Ibn Jarir At Tabari, Al Baihaqi and Ibn Asaakir narrate from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (Allah be pleased with them both) and Sayyiduna Ibn Mas’ood (Allah be pleased with him) that Allah the Almighty sent Jibreel to the Earth to bring clay. The earth said to Jibreel, “I seek refuge with Allah from you that you decrease from me. ” So Jibreel returned without taking anything from the Earth. Jibreel said, “O Lord, it sought refuge through you so I gave it refuge. ”Similarly Allah sent Mikaeel (and the same occurred with him). Then Allah sent the Angel of Death and the Earth sought refuge from him. Sayyiduna Malak ul Mawt (the Angel of Death) responded, “And I seek refuge with Allah from returning without fulfilling His Command. ” So he took from the surface of the Earth.
How many calls do you receive every day? • Ad Dailami narrates from Zaid Ibn Thaabit (Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “If you saw the time of death and its distance, you would despise of hope and its deception. The Angel of death (peace be upon him) calls out to every member of a household twice a day. Whoever the Angel of death (peace be upon him) finds to be one whose time limit has finished, he takes that person’s soul. Then when that person’s family members cry and mourn, the Angel of death asks, “Why are you crying and mourning? By Allah, I have not shortened your lifespan nor have I prevented your provisions from reaching you. I do not have any sin. Indeed I will return to you again and again until none of you remain. ” • Abdur Razzaq, Ibn ul Jarir, Ibn Abi Haatim and Al Imam Ahmad in Az Zuhd narrate from Mujaahid that there is not a house of straw nor a house of clay except that the Angel of death goes around it twice a day. • Ibn Abi Shaibah narrates in his Musannaf from Abdul A’laa At Tameemi that the Angel of death examines every member of a household twice a day. • Al Hasan said, “By Allah, if they saw his place and heard his speech, they would forget their dead and cry for themselves. ” • Ibn Abi Haatim narrates from Ka’b that there is no house except that the Angel of death is at its door seven times observing whether there is anyone there who he has been commanded to take the soul of. ”
The Prophet of Mercy (Peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) • At Tabaraani and Abu Nu’aym narrate from Al Harith Ibn Al Khazraj that he heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saying whilst he was looking at the Angel of death near the head of a Companion from Al Ansaar, “O Angel of death! Be kind with my Companion, for indeed he is a believer. ” The Angel of death said, “Be of good cheer! Be happy! Indeed I am kind to every believer. ”
The dreadful state for the disbeliever • Ibn Abi-d-Dunyaa narrates from ‘ Ubayd Ibn ‘ Umair that Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was once in his house when a man of beautiful appearance arrived. Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) said, “O servant of Allah! Who entered you into my house?” The man replied, “Its Lord has entered me into it. ” Sayyiduna Ibrahim said, “Its Lord has more right over it. So who are you?” He said, “I am the Angel of death. ” Sayyiduna Ibrahim said, “You have been described with attributes that I do not see in you (at this time). ” Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) told the Angel of death (peace be upon him) to turn around. There were eyes at his front and eyes at his back. Every hair of the Angel of death was like a human being who is standing. Sayyiduna Ibrahim sought refuge from that and said, “Return to your first form. ” The Angel of death (peace be upon him) said, “O Ibrahim! When Allah sends me to someone who He loves to meet, He sends me in the form that you saw me first. ”
How does the Angel of death take souls from various areas of the world at the same time? • Al Imam Ahmad narrates in Az Zuhd and Abu Nu’aym in Hilyah from Mujaahid who said, “The Earth was created like a bowl for the Angel of death (peace be upon him). He consumes from wherever he wishes. Assistants have been created for him who finish lives then he take it from them. ” • Ibn Jarir narrates from Rabee ’ Ibn Anas that he was asked about the Angel of death, “Is he the only one who takes the souls?” He replied, “He is the one who controls the matters of the soul and he has helpers upon that. However the Angel of death is the leader and every stride of his goes from the East to the West. ”
The Assistants of Malak ul Mawt • ‘And if you see when the unjust are in the throes of death and the Angels are with their hands outstretched (saying); “Surrender your souls; this day you shall be given a disgraceful punishment – the recompense of your fabricating lies against Allah, and your scorning His signs. ” Surah Al An’aam 6:93 • ‘And it is He Who removes your souls at night (while you sleep) and knows whatever you commit by day; then He raises you again during the day; to complete the term appointed; then it is to Him that you are to return – He will then inform you of what you used to do. And He is Omnipotent over His bondmen and sends guardians over you; to the extent that when death comes to one of you, Our Angels remove his soul and they do not err. ’ Surah Al An’aam 6: 60-61 • In the Tafseer (exegesis) of Ayah 61 of Surah Al An’aam , Ibn Abi Haatim and others narrate from Ibrahim An Nakha’i that the Angels remove the souls then the Angel of death takes the souls from them after that.
The Blessed Nights and the reminder that they provide Ibn Abi-d-Dunya narrates from ‘ Ataa Ibn Yasaar that when the night of the 15 th night of Sha’baan • arrives, the Angel of death is given a page and it is said to him, “Take whoever is mentioned on this page. ” So indeed a servant sleeps on his bed, marries and constructs buildings whilst his name has been written amongst the dead. • Ad Deenawati narrates from Rashid Ibn Saeed that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “In the night of the 15 th night of Sha’baan , Allah reveals to the Angel of death the taking of the souls of those who the Almighty wills to take during that year. ” • Al Khateeb and Ibn un Najaar narrate from the mother of believers, Sayyidah A’ishah (Allah be pleased with her) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would fast the entire month of Sha’baan to the extent that he would combine it with Ramadhan. Yet he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) never fasted any full month (outside of Ramadhan) apart from Sha’baan . So I said, “O Messenger of Allah! Indeed Sha’baan is amongst the most beloved months to you for fasting. ” The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, “Yes . O A’ishah ! In this month, it is written for the Angel of death whose soul he is to take. I love that my name not be relayed except whilst I am fasting. ” • Ibn Jarir narrates from Omar the freed servant of Ghafarah that the names of the ones who will die till the next Layla-tul-Qadr (Night of Power) are relayed to the Angel of death on Layla-tul-Qadr. So you will find a man marrying women and planting trees whilst his name is amongst the dead.
Salaam to you O Believer from the Most Merciful Lord! • Al Mirwazi and Ibn Abi-d-Dunya narrate from Sayyiduna AbdUllah Ibn Mas’ud (Allah be pleased with him) that when the Angel of death comes to take the soul of a believer, he says, “Your Lord conveys Salaam to you. ” • ‘Those whose souls the Angels remove in a state of purity, saying, “Peace be upon you – enter Paradise, the reward of your deeds. ” Surah An Nahl 16:32
