Secondary French Immersion January 2019
FI District Review 2015-2019 Mandate: To enhance the School District’s French Immersion program K-12 by reviewing accessibility and programming options at the elementary and secondary levels.
Rationale for Changes • Stay in French! • Align with the new provincial curriculum § Personalized learning § Flexible pathways to graduation § Meaningful learning
Consultation Feedback Students, parents and staff requests: • Increased flexibility in secondary French Immersion timetable • More choice for language instruction in academic courses • Enhanced oral language and socio-cultural opportunities • Authentic, real world experiences in French
Other Student Feedback • “Our education in French immersion gives fluency in reading and writing, but leaves one ill prepared for world situations and conversations.” • “ Conversation would be a great class to have in French! In French immersion, we don’t have much opportunity to have everyday conversations in French. If we had this class, my French speaking skills would be much better.” • “ Language is already such a big part of culture and it would be interesting to learn more about French culture, particularly if you plan/want to live in France or French speaking countries .”
