  3. French Immersion • A well researched program • Promotes functional bilingualism • Taught across Canada since 1978 • Late French Immersion was introduced in North Vancouver in 2002 • More than 2,500 students enrolled in French Immersion across the District

  4. Why French Immersion? Increases Encourages understanding critical and and respect of creative thinking other cultures Develops self Contributes to Canadian unity confidence Multiplies future French Improves literacy educational and skills career Immersion opportunities

  5. Characteristics of LFI • Intensive and challenging program • Follows the same BC curriculum as in English • Students join their Early French Immersion peers in secondary school (Grade 8) • Goal: functional bilingualism by the end of grade 12

  6. Percentage of Instruction Grade 7 LFI: 80% French instruction Grade 6 LFI: 100% French Instruction

  7. Curriculum • The year begins with intensive French vocabulary acquisition to provide the base needed for other subjects to be taught in French. • English Language Arts are not taught or assessed.

  8. Stages of Learning (Grade 6) Term 1: We’re getting started! Most of the emphasis is on acquiring basic vocabulary and building a sense of community. Term 2: We’re gaining confidence and working more on other subject areas. Term 3: We’re more comfortable learning in French and are starting to speak “unscripted”.

Stages of Learning (Grade 7) Term 1: Picking up where we left off in grade 6 by fostering community with an emphasis on taking risks and becoming more comfortable listening and speaking in French. Term 2: We’re developing our confidence communicating (both orally and written) in target language by expressing opinions using taught vocabulary. Term 3: Working toward our French Immersion goal of being functionally bilingual – speaking, listening and reading in French independently.

  10. Secondary French Immersion 13 French courses between Grades 8-12 to meet the requirement for the Bilingual Dogwood Graduation Diploma Socio-Cultural opportunities: • Festival du film • Concours d’art oratoire • Français pour l’avenir • Idélire (French author visit) • Cultural exchanges

Registration 2019-2020 Registration from January 20, 2020 – February 28, 2020 for priority placement and inclusion in the lottery The NVSD Late French Immersion Application Form is available at: • Your local school • NVSD website (www.sd44.ca) • Central Registration Office (2121 Lonsdale Avenue, 2 nd floor)

Registration • Registration form to be submitted directly to the Central Registration Office (2121 Lonsdale Avenue) • Late French Immersion is a district program (no catchment areas), parents indicate first and second choice on the registration form • Siblings are given first priority in Late French Immersion • Remaining spaces are determined by lottery • Letter will be sent prior to the end of April 2020 informing you of your placement
