SATISFACTORY PROGRESS In order to remain in the PhD or MFA program, all students must maintain good academic standing which includes the following: • GPA – Students must maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or higher • Enrollment of Units – Students must maintain continuous registration (at least 12 units) each quarter throughout graduate career • Normative Time to Degree – Students must advance to candidacy and complete the degree within the limitations established per their program. A student exceeding the maximum time may not be able to receive University resources (e.g., financial aid, TA-ships, housing, etc.)

GRADING • Acceptable grades are: A+ through B and “S” • Always choose “Grade Option” – “P” / “NP” courses will not count toward graduate course (200+) requirements • Grade Reports – Check your transcript! • Incomplete (I) • SOH Policy requires all Incomplete grades to be changed by August 31 to receive funding. • No Report (NR) • Withdrawal (W)

FULL-TIME ENROLLMENT • 12 units MINIMUM • 16 units MAXIMUM • 17+ units – Email Graduate Coordinator • Students must register in at least 12 units before fee payment deadline in order for fees to be paid • Teaching Assistants/Associates (TA) must enroll in 399: University Teaching units under the appropriate department/program

  7. ENROLLMENT DEADLINES ADD/DROP/UNIT CHANGE Deadline: Friday of Week 2 @ 5:00pm Missed Deadline? • Submit electronic Enrollment Exception through StudentAccess • No guarantee that request will be approved • Automatic $3.00 processing charge for any late add/drop/change

  8. ALTERNATE ENROLLMENT OPTIONS Intercampus Exchange Program • Allows students to concurrently register at another UC campus • Must submit paperwork at least 4 weeks prior to start of quarter In-Absentia • Conducting research outside of California • Renewable for up to 6 quarters • Must have advanced to candidacy for PhD

  9. ALTERNATE ENROLLMENT OPTIONS (CONT.) Leave of Absence (LOA) • 3 quarter maximum without exception • Must complete at least one quarter of work at UCI Filing Fee • One-time only option for students who are ABD • Maintains active student status without having to register or pay full-time fees

  13. 5+2 PROGRAM • A national problem in Humanities: Longer time to degree • Two pilot programs: Philosophy and Visual Studies • Additional funding during first five years • Reason to finish in five years: Mellon Humanities Faculty Fellows (MHFF) • All Ph.D. students in Humanities who complete in five years are eligible for MHFF

Humanities Financial Support TA Campus Fee Coverage • Humanities OGS pays TA Campus Fees for first five years • Students responsible for TA Campus Fees after five year period External Fellowship Fee Coverage • Fellowship award must be $5,000+ per quarter • Must inform Humanities OGS at the time of award • Humanities OGS will cover in-state tuition for duration of fellowship

Humanities Fellowship Opportunities Conference Travel Grant • Fall and Spring calls • Awards range $500 - $1,000 Summer Dissertation Fellowships • $3,000 Fellowship Stipend • Must have Advanced to Candidacy Summer Language Travel Grant • $1,000 Award • Defray costs of taking language courses not offered at UCI
