EXODUS 20:12 Honor your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that the Lord your God is giving you.
EPHESIANS 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents as you would the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
Preliminary thought regarding the last six commandments:
They are speaking to our horizontal relationships.
RELATIONSHIP WITH GOD 1. No other gods before Me 2. No idols 3. Do not use My name in vain 4. Keep holy the Sabbath
RELATIONSHIP WITH PEOPLE 5. Honor your father and mother 6. Do not murder 7. Do not commit adultery 8. Do not steal 9. Do not lie 10.Do not covet
MARK 12:29-31 This is the most important, Jesus answered: Listen, Israel! The Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your mind, and with all your strength. The second is: Love your neighbor as yourself. There is no other command greater than these.
1 JOHN 4:20-21 If anyone says, I love God, yet hates his brother, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother he has seen cannot love the God he has not seen. And we have this command from Him: The one who loves God must also love his brother.
THE FIFTH COMMANDMENT 1. The Fifth Commandment gives priority to the family relationships. 2. God is affirming the structure of the family and the value of the father and mother. 3. The duty of every child is to honor their father and mother.
What does it mean to honor your parents? How do you show honor to your parents?
“The word ‘honor’ means to treat someone with the proper respect due to the person and their role.” ESV Study Bible

DENNIS PRAGER “They get special treatment. Parents are unique so they must be treated in a unique way.”
DEUTERONOMY 21:18-19 If a man has a stubborn and rebellious son who does not obey his father or mother and doesn’t listen to them even after they discipline him, his father and mother must take hold of him and bring him to the elders of his city, to the gate of his hometown.
DEUTERONOMY 21:20-21 They will say to the elders of his city, This son of ours is stubborn and rebellious; he doesn’t obey us. He’s a glutton and a drunkard. Then all the men of his city will stone him to death. You must purge the evil from you, and all Israel will hear and be afraid.
4. Parents are responsible to instruct that their children honor them.
PROVERBS 22:6 Teach a youth about the way he should go; even when he is old he will not depart from it.
EPHESIANS 6:1-3 Children, obey your parents as you would the Lord, because this is right. Honor your father and mother, which is the first commandment with a promise, so that it may go well with you and that you may have a long life in the land.
DEUTERONOMY 6:4-7 Listen, Israel: The Lord our God, the Lord is One. Love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, and with all your strength. These words that I am giving you today are to be in your heart. Repeat them to your children. Talk about them when you sit in your house and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up.
DEUTERONOMY 6:8-9 Bind them as a sign on your hand and let them be a symbol on your forehead. Write them on the doorposts of your house and on your gates.
KEY THOUGHT: Children will honor their parents when there is an expectation for honor, and they are trained to honor.
HOW DO YOU TRAIN YOUR CHILDREN TO RESPECT YOU? 1. Consequences and discipline for disobedience 2. Instruct them to honor you 3. Love your children 4. Live a life of integrity
5. The Fifth Commandment is the only commandment with a promise

REASONS WHY CHILDREN SHOULD HONOR THEIR PARENTS 1. It benefits society 2. To learn to honor God as their ultimate authority to whom they are accountable 3. To be protected from ruining their life
PROVERBS 6:20-23 My son, keep your fathers command, and don’t reject your mothers teaching. Always bind them to your heart; tie them around your neck. When you walk here and there, they will guide you; when you lie down, they will watch over you; when you wake up, they will talk to you. For a command is a lamp, teaching is a light, and corrective discipline is the way to life.
D.L. MOODY “Disobedience and disrespect for parents are often the first steps in the downward track. Many a criminal has testified that this is the point where he first went astray. I have lived over sixty years, and I have learned one thing if I have learned nothing else- that no man or woman who dishonors father or mother ever prospers.
D.L. MOODY Young man, young woman, how do you treat your parents? Tell me that, and I will tell you how you an going to get on in life.”
