General view Bible Society is committed to supporting Bible work in Cambodia through Bible translation and distribution, teaching people to read so they can read the Bible, broadcasting daily Scripture readings on the radio and through bringing young Christians together for worship. 2. Cambodia map I’d like to take you to one village, 18 miles from Siem Reap, Cambodia’s second largest city, where you can see the impact Bible Society supporters’ prayers and gifts are having. 3. Mechrey flag 4. Mechrey aerial shot Mechrey is a floating village. Around 200 families live in floating huts on the river, moving up and downstream as the floods subside or swell. Like most of the Cambodian population, these are subsistence farmers – in this case, fishermen. The village has a Buddhist temple at its centre, a few shops, a school and a church (blue flag). Thirty-five adults adults and 50 children regularly worship at the church. Two years ago Bible Society came here to distribute Bibles – and the family of Christians who live here (yellow flag) were among those who received a copy. Meet Vibol flag 5. 6. Vibol’s family Meet the Ket family, standing here on the veranda of the floating home. 7. Vibol zoom This is Vibol Ket. She’s 28 and became a Christian two years ago when the Pastor came to her house and told her about Jesus. Twelve years ago years ago she married her husband … 8. Tin zoom … Tin, 31, who’s a fisherman. He became a Christian five months after Vibol when she told him that, as she was a Christian and he was a Buddhist, they would not be together in heaven. 9. Children zoom And these are their three children: Keo Tuy, 11, Tan Tuy, eight, and nine-month-old David Tuy. 01
Cambodia Prezi Script 10. Vibol’s family The whole family lives in this tiny floating house. The floorboards are wooden, with lots of gaps and rotting wood. Cigarette boxes have been flattened to make walls for a bedroom, and material makes a doorway. The only furniture in the living area is a table. Vibol and her family are among the poorest of the poor – and life is tough. What little money they earn from selling fish is spent on buying rice, soy sauce and medicine for the children, who often fall ill due to the dirty water. When they don’t catch fish to sell, the family go hungry. When it rains, the walls and roof of their home leak. 11. Tin fishing Every morning, Tin gets up at 4 am and rows for half an hour to the spot where he fishes. He spends his time laying lines and checking his nets, and returns with the morning catch at 7 am. On a good day, he’ll earn £3 to £5. He fishes again from 1 pm to 5 pm. 12. Children in boat Meanwhile, the children get up at 6 am and leave for school in a boat at 7 am. There’s never enough food for breakfast. They come home for lunch, and finish the school day around 4.30 pm. 13. Vibol cleaning Vibol takes care of the baby, washes clothes, cleans and prepares their food. She’s continuously carrying out repairs to the walls and roof of the house, to stop the rain pouring in. 14. Family reading Bible In the evening, the whole family sit down together for a meal of rice and soy sauce. Afterwards, Tin reads the Bible to them. They received this Bible from Bible Society in 2011: they would never have been able to afford the cost of buying a copy for themselves. It is a treasured possession. For Vibol, it is changing everything… 15. Quote from Vibol Here’s what she said: ‘Even though I am poor, I know God is not poor and I believe one day God will bless me. Through the Bible I am learning to be a kind person and to love my neighbour. It also helps me to see where my life is going. I don’t know what God will do, but I trust him.’ 16. Mechrey aerial shot But Vibol can’t read – which is why Tin reads the Bible to her every night. So, she’s started attending Bible Society literacy classes, held at the church in Mechrey. 17. Literacy class flag 18. Literacy class Bible Society’s literacy class here runs once a week for three months, with students following along in a textbook. By the end, they’ll be able to read basic text. It has an incredible success rate: 60 to 70% of adults and 90% of children will be able to read by the end of the course. Teaching people to read means the Bible is no longer a closed book to Christians like Vibol. They can read and engage with God’s word in their own time. But learning to read also helps lift people out of poverty. It helps them stand up for their rights, get a fair price for their goods. It opens their 02 eyes to new opportunities.
Cambodia Prezi Script 19. Vibol quote Here’s what Vibol said: ‘It’s very important to learn to read so you can read the Scripture. It’s also important to read so I can calculate how much the fish man should pay me for our fish.’ 20. Vibol thank you Your gifts have made all the difference to Vibol. You’ve helped her – and people like her – have a Bible and you’re teaching her to read it. Your gifts have broken down barriers of poverty and illiteracy. Vibol passed on this message of thanks to you: ‘ I want to say thank you to God for Bible Society and the people who gave so I could have a Bible.’ 21. Huge need for Scriptures But the job is not yet complete. 22. Cambodia map Cambodia has one of the fastest-growing churches in the world. In 1993, when Cambodia opened up again after the atrocities of the Khmer Rouge period, there were around 5,000 Christians in the country. Today, there are estimated to be around 250,000 Cambodian Christians. This has created a huge demand for Bibles. In rural churches, people often share one Bible between two or three. 23. Neighbouring village flag Christians in a floating village near Mechrey have already approached Bible Society asking for help. They’ve seen the difference in their neighbours – and want Bibles and literacy classes to come to their village too. 24. Whole view Your gifts and prayers are releasing the power of the Bible into lives and communities across Cambodia. Your support is bringing healing, hope and joy. You are answering the call for Scripture from brothers and sisters in Christ. 25. Village by village … 26. £14 gift handle Just £14 will put a copy of the Bible into someone’s hands, and teach them to read it. Can you imagine the impact of that gift? Helping someone become literate AND giving them the Word of God. Opening up the Bible for them, for the first time. 27. Thanks and please help If you can, please give a gift today to help another Christian like Vibol. Thank you. 28. General view 03
