  8. Parents Make a Difference! 10 Ways To Help Your Child Do Well In School 1. Show you care. Your child needs hugs and words of support. Ask your child about school each day. 2. Read, read, read. Read with your child or have him or her read every day. Make it fun — talk about what you’ve read. 3. Make home a place for learning. Help your child practice reading, writing, math and science skills. Stimulate your child’s creativity. 4. Promote healthy habits. Make sure your child gets plenty of sleep and exercise and eats balanced meals. Schedule regular checkups. 5. Be a role model. Your child learns from you. Be positive about education and show you enjoy learning. 6. Encourage independence. Allow your child to make mistakes and learn to accept their consequences. Give your child responsibilities such as household chores. 7. Create a study routine. Set a time and quiet place for your child to work everyday. Go over homework together. 8. Get involved. Meet with your child’s teacher, attend school events and help out at school. 9. Build success. Help raise your child’s self - esteem by setting reachable goals and praising your child’s efforts, not just results. 10. Make school important. Insist on good attendance and punctuality.

  9. A.K. School Traffic Safety Parents and other adults can do much to improve traffic safety around schools by driving cautiously, teaching children safe practices, and limiting vehicle trips. In some cases, parents and other drivers may be the cause of safety concerns. Drivers should obey all traffic laws and apply the following practices: • Carpooling can reduce the number of vehicles near the school, especially during poor weather. • Front parking lot reserved for Kindergarten drop-off and pick-up only. • Avoid parking on the opposite side of the street from the school. • Use a hands-free cell phone device while driving in the parking lot. • Make sure children are careful in opening the vehicle doors and that they exit and enter on the curbside of the vehicle. • Children should not be allowed to cross the parking lot to reach a vehicle. • Drivers should not double park or block traffic. Waiting or parking in red zones is also not allowed. • Do not block buses or use areas designated for buses only. If an emergency vehicle requires access, the area should be cleared. • Never leave a vehicle unattended in a loading zone. • Do not violate the traffice laws regarding our surrounding streets. Violations still present a danger and cause congestion during the time of day when it is most important to provide safety for children and avoid congestion. • Do not make u-turns anywhere in the parking lot of on Stevenson. • Try not make left turns onto Stevenson during arrival and dismissal hours.
