  1. Altro & Sustainability 2012

  2. Aim of this Presentation • Define what we mean by Sustainability • Look at the environmental impact of the construction industry • Introduce Altro’s 6 Steps to Sustainability programme • Discuss some of the major milestones achieved so far. • Look at the Recofloor scheme in more detail • Present some of the environmental benefits of using PVC • Summary

  3. What is Sustainability? Most commonly used definition of sustainability: “Meeting the needs of the present without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs” WCED – 1987 Brundtland Report More with less!

  4. 3 Aspects of Sustainability Viable Bearable Sustainable Development Equitable Interrelated!

  5. The Environmental impact of the Construction Industry 8% GDP • Produces 3 times the amount of waste generated by UK households combined. • (DTI) • Around 120 million tonnes construction and demolition waste land filled every year, (WRAP) • One house buried in the ground for every 3 built! • About 25 million tonnes could be recycled or reused • Building use contributes to 50% of UK CO 2 emissions and construction itself a further 7% • 60% UK’s total energy use – construction & operation of buildings

  6. Altro’s 6 Steps to Sustainability Programme • Holistic approach to managing sustainability • Considers all aspects of environmental impact

  7. “Sustainability and Altro: A holistic approach in focus .”

  8. Major Milestones • 100% recyclable packaging • Up to 20% recycled content in ASF • 500 tonnes of factory waste PVC recycled every year – zero PVC waste to landfill. • 70% reduction in waste to landfill 2007 ‐ 2012 • 7.2% reduction in energy consumption 2007 ‐ 2009 • 4% reduction in electricity 2011 • Altro Xpress Lay – first fully recyclable safety flooring. • Recofloor and Recowall launched 2009/2010 • Only 1% of the water used in manufacturing process compared to 10 years ago • World’s first safety flooring to use a bio plasticiser (Altro Suprema II) Finalist 2012

  9. CSR – Giving Something Back

  10. About Recofloor • Altro one of two founder members. • Collects and recycles: Smooth vinyl off cuts Safety flooring off cuts Smooth uplifted, (depending upon condition) • Off cuts recycled into new vinyl flooring • Uplifted material recycled into traffic calming products • Altro collects and recycles all safety flooring on behalf of Recofloor.

  11. About Recofloor • 437 active collection sites including 32distributors • 786 tonnes collected since Jan 2009 •Collected from flooring contractors, distributors, construction and refurbishment sites & waste transfer stations.

  12. About PVC • 57% salt ‐ a natural and abundant resource • 43% derived from oil • 0.3% world’s oil consumption. • Cost effective & durable • Long life applications • Recyclable – 190,000 tonnes post consumer waste recycled 2009 as part of Vinyl 2010. There is absolutely no evidence that vinyl damages human health or the environment. PVC is durable, low maintenance, recyclable and performs well in LCA tests. ” Dr. Patrick Moore, founding member of Greenpeace (2006).

  13. 50 Years of safe use PVC is the most widely used flooring for operating theatres

  14. PVC Saving Lives

  15. PVC Saving Energy

  16. PVC Saving Water

  17. PVC & Interior Surfaces

  18. Summary • Sustainability – “more with less” • Construction industry has a massive impact upon the environment worldwide. • Altro’s 6 Steps to Sustainability programme launched 2008 – holistic approach. • Significant progress made in all areas • Recofloor – vinyl take back scheme collecting and recycling significant amounts of vinyl flooring. • PVC performs well environmentally
