A Day in the Life of a Kindergarten Student
Beginning of the School Day • The school day BEGINS at 7:55 AM. -Breakfast starts at 7:45 AM. -If not eating breakfast, kids should not arrive before 7:40 which is when supervision begins. -Please let us know when your child will be late or absent. -Students must register in the office and will be considered tardy if they arrive after the 7:55 bell.
Opening Routines • Greet friends and teacher. • Hang up belongings. • Choose a lunch. • Calendar • Schedule • Announcements
Learn and Practice School Expectations • Routines and Procedures. • Positive Behavior Intervention Supports (PBIS).
Focus on Literacy • Sharing stories and poems. • Practicing writing. • Learning letters and words. • Reading is FUN! .
How Parents Guide Children’s Literacy Development • Read to children. • Talk about what you read. Predict. • Model writing for children. • Value their attempts at writing. • Recite rhymes/play with words and language. • Share alphabet books. • Read print in the environment. (STOP, EXIT, etc.).
Focus on Math • Counting and learning about numbers. • Working with shapes and patterns. • Measuring and collecting data. • Writing numbers and making charts. • Working on story problems-adding and subtracting.
How Parents Guide Children’s Math Development • Play games that use mathematics-examples: counting, money, colors, shapes. • Talk about math in the books that you read. • Find and talk about numbers found in everyday life. • Model writing numerals. • Count, Count, Count!

Art Once a week we have art class with a licensed Art teacher.
Music Three times a week we have music class with a licensed music teacher.
Physical Education (PE) Twice a week we learn about healthy living and life long fitness from a licensed PE teacher.
Library • Twice a week we learn about library organization and a variety of literature from a licensed library teacher. -We listen to and discuss great books. -We choose and check out books.
Technology • We work on computers. • We learn how the SMARTboard works.
School Counselor • Once a week we have classroom lessons with a licensed School Counselor. • Individual or small group meetings • Resource for families
English Language Learners If your child, or someone in the home, speaks another language, she/he will be tested to see if they qualify for English Language Learner classes. Students can get extra support so they can be successful at school.
Lunch • Students may bring lunch or buy lunch or milk at school. • Students have individual lunch accounts. Each time a child eats school lunch the cost is deducted. • Money can be put into the account through the school or on-line.
Snack Healthy snacks are offered daily with a focus on healthy food choices.
Recess • A time to play. • A time to socialize and take turns. • A time for physical activity. Recess times: Morning, Mid-day and Afternoon
Dismissal Time • Review the day. • Give reminders for tomorrow. • Organize and pack up to leave. Destinations: Bus, after school program, family or friend pick-up
End of the School Day • The school day ENDS at 2:55 PM except on Thursdays, which is one hour earlier at 1:55 PM. -Students leaving prior to the end of the day must be signed out in the office by an adult.
Important Health Information • Health History/Physical Card • Immunization Certificate with current immunizations • Dental Screening Certificate • Vision Screening Certificate • Medical Administration Consent forms • Enter health information in Power School. • Inform School nurse of any special health needs.
Parent Teacher Organization (PTO) • Parent involvement is critical for student success. • Our school’s Ice Cream Social will be on August 21st. Information about PTO will be available that day. • You are an Automatic member of the PTO. • No fees or membership dues. • Meetings are the first Tuesday of every month.
Before and After School Program • Our school has a Before and After School Program. • Contact Travis Mai, tmai@coralville.org, 319.248.1750 for information about the Before and After School Program.
Save the date... Jump Start Kindergarten August 15th 8:30-11:30 Have your child get a “jump start” into Kindergarten! The day will be filled with fun activities with an emphasis on school procedures and routines.
