We are a Leader in Me School !
What should we do this summer to help our child be ready for Kindergarten ?
Help your child become more INDEPENDENT !
Examples of Independent Expectations I can stand in a line and I can greet my teacher. wait my turn. I can follow classroom routines independently.
Examples of Independent Expectations I can sit on the carpet I can finish center work I can use technology and listen. by myself. respectfully.
Examples of Independent Expectations I can show respect in the cafeteria. I can open my containers I can make my lunch choice. by myself.
Examples of Independent Expectations I can use the bathroom and wash my hands by myself. I can synergize and be a good friend. I can put on and zip my own jacket.
My Child is an English Language Learner. How can I help? • Read to your child in your home-language and talk about what you read. Reading is reading . . . No matter what language! You are still building good literacy skills. • Listen to audiobooks together from the library and talk about the characters and what happens in the story. • Go places and do things with your child. The more you do and talk, the more background knowledge they will have.
Additional Ways You Can Help Your Child Be Ready • Read, go places and talk with your children this summer! • Talk about their fears and concerns. Listen to what they are worried about and discuss ways to handle their fears. • Have a transportation plan and stick to it from DAY ONE. Let your child know the plan in advance. • Help them to become more independent. • Talk about school and be excited! Your excitement will be contagious. • Plan FUN activities that will help them be prepared for some of the activities we will be doing in the classroom. Some suggestions are included in the handouts.
Kindergarten Screening August 7 th and 8th Because we recognize that children are constantly growing, changing and learning new things, we will be conducting our Kindergarten screenings in August to help us form balanced classes for the upcoming school year. The basic assessment will include such items as: • Fine motor skills • Writing name • Alphabet identification • Letter sound knowledge • Basic print concepts • Color and shape identification • Counting • Number identification Sign up on the Creighton’s Corner Webpage If you have difficulty with the sign up or have additional questions or concerns, please email Rachel Brill at Rachel.Brill@lcps.org
