The first day of kindergarten is an exciting and important milestone in the lives of children and their families. Kindergarten provides a solid foundation for academic achievement and success in elementary school and beyond.

K/1 Individual Development Class • Self Contained Class- 12:1:1 • Uses IEP driven goals for identified students in conjunction with our Kindergarten and First Grade curriculum. • Mainstreams for specials and lunch and field trips with general education K/1 classes.
Routines Snacks – send in one healthy snack each day Lunch Procedures, my school bucks, purchasing LABEL everything, lunchbox, snack bag, coat, sweatshirt All kindergarteners have a TOTE bag, large enough to hold all their belongings and their jacket. No backpacks. Help your child to be independent by trying things at home. Can they work their shoes, zip/snap their pants, open their lunchbox?

School Supplies Each child will need the following supplies: • A folder • A small rest blanket • A smock for painting • Optional --Ziploc bags The supply lists are available on the Herricks website, ID kindergarten will list separately.

Math — Think, not Do Decades of research shows that teaching standard algorithms, memorization and execute procedures does not work. We need to teach kids how to think, not just do. The “old” way only works for a few…this way makes math accessible to all.

PLTW Kindergarten Modules Structure and Function : Study of structure and function to build a structure that withstands the blow of the big bad wolf. Pushes and Pulls : Study forces to design a model that can be used to move rocks out of a yard so a swing set can be put in. Structure and Function in the Human Body : Explore the relationship between structure and function in the human body to design and build a cast for a broken bone. Animals and Algorithms : Use Scratch Jr. to create a short animation about animals and their environment.
Orientation Day Wednesday, August 29 This is a time for the children to see their classroom • and teacher before school begins. Parent and child visit the class together then can tour the building. Please bring ALL requested documents so your child • can begin the first day with everything in order, to facilitate a smooth transition. Bring their rest time blanket also. Three sessions for the meet and greet, you will be • given a time between 10:30 and 12:00 for your small group visit.
First Day of Kindergarten Tuesday September 4, 2018. • • Half Day, morning only. • Buses run for the special kindergarten dismissal. • Bring a healthy snack, not lunch • First weeks of school - be consistent with dismissals to create routine and a feeling of security for your child.
