It was a Slavic populated Roman city founded in the 6th Century AD • The Skull Tower in Nis is 3m high and originally contained 952 Serbian skulls. The tower was constructed by the Ottomans after the Battle of Cegar in 1809 • Nis is Serbia’s 3rd largest city ~240km south of Belgrade. It is the birthplace of Emperor Constantine the Great, the founder of Constantinople (modern day Istanbul) • The memorial mausoleum, Tekeris, Loznica, in which 3,500 warriors are buried after the crucial Battle of Cer in 1914. This battle was fought between the Serbian and Austro-Hungarian armies. It was the first allied victory in WWI. • Serbia is at the cross roads of East and West, so every town and acre of land has some story of historical significance
