  3. WHAT IS SWPBIS?? ❖ SWPBIS is the practice of focusing on the ‘good’ as it happens instead of the ‘bad’ behavior choices after they happen. ❖ Instead of waiting, and only responding to a student’s inappropriate choice, we are proactive in encouraging their appropriate behavior choices. ❖ This practice creates an environment where students are earning positive interventions for positive behavior and not just simply earning consequences for inappropriate behavior.

  4. POSITIVE BEHAVIOR ❖ The theory behind this practice (researched & supported by MIZZOU) states when a student is praised for the ‘good’ behavior choice, it will motivate them and their peers to continue to practice appropriate behaviors. ❖ Any adult (teacher, custodian, librarian, etc.) in our building can recognize any student for their positive behavior. ❖ Positive recognition can be in the form of specific verbal praise, positive office referral, or a tangible (at Lawson...we use ROAR TICKETS). ❖ When an adult verbally acknowledges a student’s kind action, they may give him/her a ROAR TICKET which can be saved and turned in for a reward in that student’s classroom (these will vary based on the teacher & grade level).

  5. POSITIVE BEHAVIOR In addition, Lions Club is a group that works to promote positive character for all students at Lawson. Lions Club members get to participate in a special quarterly activity celebrating their “good” choices! Qualifications: 1. Student must have zero office/bus referrals for the quarter. 2. Student must have A’s, B’s, or C’s in all subject areas for the quarter. 3. Student must have less than 5 minors for the quarter.

  6. What happens if a student makes a negative behavior choice? ➢ We all make mistakes, what is important is that we learn from them. Children are bound to make a few as they learn appropriate behavior, too. When this happens, a quick verbal reminder is given to help the student get back on track. ➢ IF the student continues the inappropriate behavior, a consequence is earned in the form of a Minor. ➢ It is not uncommon for a student to have a Minor every now and then, but multiple Minors over a short period of time is unusual and a cause for concern. ○ It is important to remember a Minor is not earned the moment a ‘bad’ choice is made. ○ A reminder is given...the opportunity for the student to correct the behavior is ALWAYS the path LAWSON takes. ○ when a student chooses to ignore the correction is when consequences begin.

  7. The BIG 3 Minor will be attached to a student’s planner; parent/guardian discuss with student, sign & return the next school day. Behavior concerns may require a phone call home.
