The Senior Skills Class 2016-17-18 This class is for learners who are unable to cope in the remedial academic and pre-vocational stream.
• Our main aim and focus is to educate and teach our children to function competently and independently in our community and within their private lives. In order to achieve this, a home, work and social simulated environment is created to facilitate independent thinking and planning so that learners are able to apply their skills they have learnt.
• Each child has an IEP (Individual Education Plan) and it is specific to each child’s needs .
The academic areas that we focus on in this stream are….
LITERACY • Reading and comprehension is encouraged at the level of the learner. • Writing skills are basic but a necessity. (as it is required to read understand and fill in forms for the future) • Spelling is not a priority but is also encouraged. (breaking down and building of words) (computer skills- word correction and dictionary skills) • Proper use of language like grammar and punctuation is used daily
NUMERACY: • Math is used in a functional and academic manner • Measurements for cooking and baking as well as measuring for woodwork and sewing. • Basic addition, subtraction, multiplication and division are encouraged • Enhance basic mental math if they are able to do so • Calculator skills for learners less abled. • Computer math activities are also used to facilitate learning.
LIFE SKILLS : • Learners are taught to recognise their own appropriate or inappropriate behaviour within their social environment as well as conduct at home and at school. • How to deal with inappropriate behaviour and its consequences. • Social skills and conversation to adults, peers and family • Practice daily skills e.g. kitchen safety and skills namely cooking and baking and serving. • Activities of daily living e.g. grooming, self-presentation and personal appearance. • General skills e.g. sewing, wood work, tie dying and crafts • Work habits and work ethic are also addressed • How to cope and deal with life's pressures • Applying First Aid
