Page 4
Drummondville Site History Site acquired in 1997 Specific issues with operations Odour in the neighbourhood Leachate treatment to be improved Important challenges to building social acceptability No dialogue with the community at that time No information provided to the public News clipping were all about demonstrations, petitions, legal prosecution… Page 5
Site Management Transformation From a first to a second generation landfill Improvement of leachate collection system Lining of every new cell Page 6 Enhancement of LF gas collection system Sophisticated wastewater treatment
Development Planning Environmental compliance is just not enough when developing projects. The benefits for the community is a fundamental consideration for building support. Our goal was to develop the best comprehensive project based on: Public expectations Public participation through consultations More information and transparency Public policies Sustainable development Waste diversion Clean energy GHG emissions reduction… Best practices at WM and throughout the industry Page 7
Environmental and Energy Complex Our strategic planning has produced a project integrating waste diversion, energy production and environmental education. Landfill gas to energy E-waste recycling Page 8 Re-use of energy Environmental education
From Landfill Gas to Energy Generation Landfill gas produced by the decomposition of organic matter Composition Nearly 50% CH 4 and similar proportion of CO 2 Extraction of landfill gas 200 vertical wells 3 levels of horizontal collectors Page 9
From Landfill Gas to Energy Double energy recovery Production of electricity for Hydro-Québec Heat recovery to supply greenhouses, Serres Demers Page 10
From Landfill Gas to Energy Electricity generation process Landfill gas used as a combustible 5 engines burn gas Engines paired with generators 7.6 MW generated = supply of 6,500 homes Electricity is being bought by Hydro-Québec who is responsible for its distribution Page 11
From Landfill Gas to Energy Energy recovery process Loss of 60% of engine heat Use is an heat exchanger Closed-circuit water recirculation system Water enters at 45 0 C and exits at 90 0 C Radiators used to cool the water in summer Page 12
From Landfill Gas to Energy Greenhouse operations Hot water circulation On the floor to heat the entire greenhouse Through the plants to Along the roof to melt the snow stimulate growth Page 13
From Landfill Gas to Energy Environmental Benefits Recovery of 37 million m 3 of landfill gas A 32% reduction in energy consumption Avoids using 2 million litres of fuel oil Reduction of 15,000 tonnes CO 2 eq = removing over 3,300 vehicles from the road Economic Benefits Investment of $25 million in Drummondville Creation of 50 jobs Growth of a Québec company A 50% increase in Serres Demers’production Presence in supermarkets 12 months of the year A 60% growth in sales Page 14
From Landfill Gas to Energy Internal use of heat for leachate treatment Biological sequential batch reactor Heating of leachate Maintaining the temperature at 25 0 C for optimal treatment High level of performance Page 15
From Landfill Gas to Energy School-factory project Community project to help youngsters (15 to 18 years old) with learning difficulties to integrate labour market Basic academic learning and work training E-waste being used for training +/- 1,000 tons recovered every year Placement rate of 85-90% $4 million investment by WM on the property Partnership with local school board Page 16
From Landfill Gas to Energy School-factory project Building heated by landfill gas Boiler adapted to burn landfill gas 77% reduction in energy costs LEED Gold certified project Page 17
From Landfill to Community Facility Sustainable remediation is not just about infrastructure, it is also about building trust with the community. Over the years, our property has become a large-scale laboratory where groups conduct experiments and research projects. Rehabilitation of Paul-Boisvert Fish seeding program creek on our property Page 18
From Landfill to Community Facility Stabilization of ditch banks and sediment retention Planting of more than 50,000 trees and shrubs on the property since 2010 Page 19
From Landfill to Community Facility Rehabilitation of peregrine falcon Mirage under the responsibility of Dr. Guy Fitzgerald Mirage was released after almost 2 years of training on WM property Page 20
Conclusion Drummondville site sustainable remediation was part of a long process; long-term strategic planning executed day after day by a dedicated team of employees since 1997. Site improvements involved engineering firm, scientists, high technologies, but especially a social dimension with the partnership/collaboration of the host community and its citizens. Drummondville Environmental and Energy Complex is a showcase for our company and recognized as a model.
