  2. What is it all about? • Student councils exist in many schools but they have different roles and different responsibilities. • Some schools have a council in name alone, and they do very little. • We are looking for our school council to have a wider role in shaping the future of our school. .

  3. The plan • Each base group, including sixth formers will vote for a student council representative (also known as base captain). • These pupils will attend a student council meeting which will happen every two weeks. • Students will meet each week with Mr Phillips who will help to chair the meetings.

  4. The plan • The role of the council is in truth up to the council, but in general, pupils will have a say in things like….. • The general day to day running of school life • Meeting with the Head and deputy heads to help to shape policies such as merits and rewards systems and behaviour. • Meeting with Governors to discuss the vision for the school. • Helping to interview new staff members on interview days

  5. Base captain role explained • You will be required to meet with the school council once every 2 weeks as a minimum. • You may be asked to give up some lunch times and after schools to meet with governors and the head. • You will be expected to help lead and develop the school. • You will also get the opportunity to go out on trips to places around the country to look at democracy in action.

  6. So what is next? Friday 15 th will be Base captain election day Friday 22 nd will be election day where we will be voting for the following • Head Boy and Head Girl (Year 13) • House Captains (Year 8 -11)

  7. How do you vote and who do you get to vote for? • You have the chance to vote for the Head Girl and Head Boy roles as well as possibly deputy roles • You also vote for the base representative in your base. • Remember make your decision on how much you trust their ability to help lead the school, not just because your friend is voting that way.
