Gaylord Downtown Renaissance Streetscape Plan Gaylord Downtown Development Authority & Gaylord Renaissance Streetscape Committee
The Reasons Why • Our downtown is not conducive to people and business • Our downtown is the heart of our community and the five lane highway that runs through it is killing it • Vehicle speeds and street widths in our downtown make it unsafe for people to cross streets • Noise levels on the sidewalks keep people from spending time in our downtown • There is a documented trend of people moving to livable downtowns • Quality of life, jobs, and investment!
Accomplished to Date • Formed the Downtown Renaissance Committee with broad representation of business and community • Raised money to prepare a concept design • Hosted a visit and review of our downtown by Dan Burden, national expert on livable cities • Held a public input open house • Held a design charrette/workshop • Completed the Milbocker-McCoy Alternate Truck Route • Completed design and project cost estimates • Starting public awareness campaign
The Basis of the Design - Remaking Our Place- • Road Diet – reducing 5 lanes to 3 • Traffic calming through the road diet, streetscape elements, bumpouts, and safety islands • Gateways at west, east and south ends of downtown as well as the Claude Shannon Park • Interactive water feature with tie to Alpine, mountains & headwaters • Places for activities • Mix of different tree species • Points of interest throughout the downtown
