Purpose - Objectives Provide professors with examples of ways to integrate INRW assignments with Service Learning projects in the community. Reveal avenues to connect inter-college departments/programs and community partners through collaborative planning. Encourage professors to identify possible Service Learning partners, purposes, and projects.
Process : Identify SLOs that lend themselves to S.L. projects and coordination with other programs. Identify students’ interests, concerns, passions. Identify campus/community programs and purposes that relate to curriculum and connect with students’ areas of interest and concern.
ESOL CULTURAL AWARENESS SERVICE LEARNING PROJECT Collaborative activity involving a class of Academic ESOL students in an Intermediate Reading and Writing class Developed questions on the topic of American culture to ask students in the class of American students The Student Learning Objective was to write an expository , descriptive or narrative paragraph The Service Learning objective was to increase multicultural awareness between students and in the campus community.
Activity Students developed questions related to culture as defined by the students through a class discussion Classes were mixed, and students randomly assigned to interview each other about their culture, traditions and lifestyle After the interviews, students used their interview notes to write paragraphs about the person they interviewed The paragraphs were shared publicly
Benefits to the ESOL Students Linguistic Benefits — An opportunity to use the English language with an American student Increased confidence A feeling of greater inclusion in the college community A close, personal look at American culture An enjoyable activity that engaged students in ―real‖ meaningful communication in English

Products – benefits to students, college, and community Expands students’ real -life experiences for reading, research, and writing, Increases students’ awareness and involvement in college and community issues and needs, Promotes problem-solving skill development. Provides for career exploration, Results in higher retention and pass rates, Builds an interactive learning community and college-community connection, Gives SJC community recognition, Provides needed services to community partners.
