TREC Introduction • TREC is a form of orienteering on horseback • Requires an understanding of map reading • Combines elements of trail riding with horsemanship skills and flatwork Regional Trec - September 27, 2015 - Cadogan Farms • WOR Trec Rules (June 2014) are the competition rules that are used for the regional competition – these rules over ride those contained in the National Le Trec Handbook • All riders will complete each phase mounted. All riders must be capable of riding independently – no lead line. • Phase C – Obstacle Course is set up in an enclosed area. • Orienteering has been modified and is shortened to allow all three phases to be held in one day. 4
Phases of the Competition • Phase A: Optimum Speed and Orienteering – riders follow a route on a map, find specific checkpoints and higher levels (D2 and up) use compass coordinates to find objectives or destination coordinate point. Regional Trec - September 27, 2015 - Cadogan Farms • Phase B: Control of Gaits – designed to demonstrate that the rider can influence the horse first in canter (or trot) then in walk • Phase C: Obstacle Course – Tests the rider and horses ability to navigate obstacles and difficulties they may encounter while trail riding. 5
Competition • Participants ride based on their Pony Club level (i.e. D, D1, D2 or C and above). • Participants can compete at a higher level if approved by their D.C. • D and D1 level riders compete as teams Regional Trec - September 27, 2015 - Cadogan Farms • 3-4 members per team. • The total of the top 3 scores are used for the final team score. • Individual placings and ribbons are provided for the obstacle course. • D2 and C+ level riders compete as individuals but ride as a group of 2, 3 or 4 during the orienteering phase. 6
Orienteering • All competitors will carry a record card that will be punched or recorded at each checkpoint. • There will be no knowledge questions at the checkpoints. • D and D1 will not need to find objectives using a compass. • D2 and C+ levels may need to use a compass to reach a Regional Trec - September 27, 2015 - Cadogan Farms destination or find an objective. • C+ Level – Multiple stages with varying optimum speeds. Knowledge of pacing will be of value. 7

Preparing for LeTrec Obstacles • Begin training now, without obstacles, by working on skills related to controlling lateral movements and halts. • Control of halt, turn on forehand, turn on haunches, side pass and rein back need to be schooled regularly, then the obstacles are not Regional Trec - September 27, 2015 - Cadogan Farms as difficult later in the season. • Encourage your coaches to spend some time on some of these movements at each lesson and encourage members to spend a few minutes each time they ride schooling these movements. • Introduce obstacles slowly and only increase level of difficulty once they have mastered each level. • De-sensitize the horses and ponies - Change up the obstacles – move them to new locations, different order, different directions, 13 add new “dressings” ie. Branches, cones, poles, straw bales etc.
Preparing for LeTrec Orienteering • Get out on trails, enjoy the countryside, practice riding with different groups, in different orders, etc. • Map reading skills, practice on foot, teach them how to Regional Trec - September 27, 2015 - Cadogan Farms use land marks (roads, fences, trail junctions, buildings, water bodies etc.) to determine their position on the map. Can be done in your backyard with a rough sketch. • When out for a trail ride have them lead the ride using a map (if one available). 14
