Aquaculture in Idaho In 1909, people in Idaho first tried trout farming east of Twin Falls. In the 1920s trout were raised in Idaho for the purpose of selling to consumers. In the 1960s the trout industry really took off in Idaho.

Rainbow Trout Rainbow Trout have a rosy pink coloring along the sides and gills. Sometimes they can have a blue and/or gold coloring. When light hits them, they shimmer like a rainbow. That’s how they got their name.

Idaho Trout Farm Facts Idaho produces more than 75% of the trout in the United States. When fish are between 12-28 oz. they are harvested and sold. Idaho sells about half of its trout to restaurants and half to grocery stores. This brings jobs and money to Idaho’s economy.
