  3. Dicklands’ Mission Statement Maximize profitability by improving production of milk, fat and protein without sacrificing linear traits.

  4. Dicklands’ Current Goals Current Goal 2019/20 Production 40 kg 45 kg Butter Fat 1.65 kg/cow per day 2 kg/cow per day Protein 1.3 kg/cow per day 1.6 kg/cow per day

  6. Strengthening the Herd • Genomic testing all heifer calves – Top 3 % • Flushed or IVF – Bottom 50% used as recipients – Remaining bred to mostly sexed semen

  14. General Overview • been with the farm for 10 years • Milking 300 • 6 Lely robots • Genomic testing all heifer calves • Started flushing 3 years ago

  15. Future Strength of Herd Average of Top 50 ranked on LPI: LPI: 3128 Pro$: 2271 Milk: 1724 SCS: 2.78 Fat: 85 Prot: 69 Conf: 10 MS: 9 F&L: 9 DS: 6

  16. History of Improvements • Majority of improvements come from in herd • Purchased 3 high indexing heifers – Flushed multiple times – These 3 as 2 year olds averaged +1.86kg fat/day • Purchased embryos from Progenesis • 25 flushes completed on farm in 2016

  17. Next Step of Improvements • Recently purchased this calf through Semex – TPI: 2779

  18. Current Strengthening • 5 donors at Boviteq for IVF – Ranging from 2650 – 2800 TPI • Interest from Semex and Select Sires for bull contract – Next group of three month old calves at 2750 TPI will be sent when of age • Continuing with flushing 2-3 donors a month with Greenbelt Veterinary

  19. Take Home Thoughts We at Dicklands feel that genomic testing has significantly helped us strengthen our herd by allowing us to strategically plan breeding and embryo transfers. This allows us to excel at a faster rate than Canadian average, achieve our goals, and profit from elite animals.
