Our TEACHING PHILOSOPHY ● We want our students to want to be “in class”, to have fun while learning, and to feel connected to us and their classmates. ● We believe that social/emotional growth is as important as academic growth. We want to nurture the whole child. ● We want to work with families to help instill our students with kindness, curiosity, skills, perseverance, and joy.
Expectations for your kindergarten child: ● Be kind to yourself and others. ● Please eat during breaks, not during meetings. ● Keep chromebook muted unless asked otherwise. ● Please have only one device in the meeting per child. ● Please be on time to meetings. ● Make sure you are in your special workplace. ● Have your materials ready. ● Have fun! ● Virtual Expectations Reminders Link
● Show Respect ● Make Good Decisions ● Solve problems
For Parents, Guardians, and Daycare Teachers: ● Please do not record audio or video of class meetings. ● If a classroom teacher shares a recording, please do not post or share.
● We practice positive reinforcement. ● Let’s all do our best to state directions in the positive rather than the negative. For example, rather than saying,“ Don’t color right now!” say, “Thank you for putting your crayon down and looking at your teacher.” ● If there is an issue with your child during the meeting, try to ignore it and deal with it later. Sometimes when we do this, the behavior goes away.
● Please help by guiding your children, but do not do their work for them. ● Thank you for helping your children learn to mute/unmute independently. ● Please encourage your children to clean up their workspaces rather than doing it for them.
● Once your child joins a meeting, they are recorded as attending. This information is sent to the district. ● Daily attendance is expected. If your child is not able to attend a meeting, please let the teacher know. ● Please do your best to join meetings on time.
● Individual assignments are reviewed, but not graded. ● We will assess students in the areas of reading, writing, listening and speaking, math, science, and social studies. ● Report cards will be distributed at conferences. ● Virtual Family/Teacher conferences will take place at the end of the semester. More information to follow.

● We will start our SIPPS reading program soon. ● SIPPS (Systematic Instruction in Phonological Awareness, Phonics, and Sight Words) is a research-based foundational skills program proven to help readers build skills and confidence for fluent, independent reading. ● The students will be assigned stories two times a week. Please be sure your child practices the stories and the appropriate sight words until they are fluent. ● We will send home a list of sight words (Sight Word Mastery List) that corresponds with the SIPPS stories. Please help them master each list.
Please click on the colored links below. ● We will incorporate Handwriting Without Tears and Smart Start Handwriting when teaching letter formation. ● Students will have many wring opportunities (in journals and “My Shared Writing” booklets) and will learn to write simple sentences. ● We want students to believe they are writers and to love writing, regardless of their developmental writing stage.
SIPPS Sight Words ● SIPPS sight words should be posted at your child’s workspace for them to look at and spell correctly each time they are used. Kindergarteners have 81 sight words linked here. This list is in alphabetical order. (Do not use the mastery list for children to reference as they need to find them in abc order.) ● Words not on this list should be spelled phonetically, or stretched out the way they sound using the method linked below. Click here for spelling a word like it sounds.
● Your child will receive a birthday crown and a bookmark in the materials distribution packet. ● We will acknowledge birthdays online at class meetings. ● We will celebrate half birthdays for those who have summer birth dates.
