Best Practices A technique or approach that has been proven to reliably lead to a desired result. It may be a standard way of doing things or the preferred method based on research or experience. A commitment to using Best Practices is a commitment to using all the knowledge and resources at one’s disposal to ensure success.
A Strong Recruitment Find quality Members who are committed to Phi Sigma Pi’s identity and mission and are eager to contribute to the success of the Chapter. ● Welcomed It should make Potential New ● Informed Members feel: ● Energized
Best Practices in Recruitment ● Seek students who will bring leadership skills and a desire to contribute to the Chapter long-term ● Stress opportunities for personal & professional development ● Share the Brother’s Creed as a foundation for what it means to be a Member ● Teach our ideals through events focused on the Tripod ● Provide opportunities for PNMs and Members to get to know one another on a deeper level
Getting to Know Potential New Members
Design an activity to evaluate a Potential New Member’s proficiency in one of the Characteristics of an Ideal Brother . For example: CHARACTERISTIC - Working with Others in Team Spirit ACTIVITY - Do a puzzle in a group to observe their interactions
Best Practices in Getting to Know PNMs ● Share Phi Sigma Pi’s mission statement as a way of conveying our organization’s values ● Find out what they are hoping to get out of joining PSP ● Provide an opportunity for a formal dialogue between Members and PNMs ● Collect information about the PNMs backgrounds, skills and interests, and use it for Bid Vote and Big/Little matching ● Give PNMs a chance to demonstrate what they would bring to the Chapter
A Strong Initiation Program Orient Initiates to the Fraternity’s ideals and educate them about the expectations for Fraternity Members. ● Valued ● Respected It should make Initiates feel: ● Included
Best Practices in the Initiation Program ● Hold a Pre-Pinning Meeting to share the significance of the Pinning Ceremony and prepare the Initiates. ● Create a detailed Initiate Handbook so that Initiates know what to expect and know what to do to be Inducted. ● Match Initiates with a Big early in the process so they have the support they need to complete the program. ● Plan Initiate Meetings that provide opportunities for the Initiates to bond as a class while learning about PSP. ● Check in regularly on each Initiate’s progress.
Evaluating Initiates
As the Initiate Advisor, list key points that you would review with the entire Chapter to ensure fairness during Final Vote. For example: No concern about an Initiate should come up during pro/con debate for the final vote if the Initiate hasn’t been notified and given an opportunity to improve.
Best Practices When Evaluating Initiates ● Share feedback from Mid Review with the Initiates in a way that is respectful and constructive. ● Use Characteristics of an Ideal Brother , or a similar objective standard, as a guide for pro/con. ● Ask questions like, “Will they make a good Member?” ● Focus on retention when discussing Initiates, including how to help them improve once they are Members. ● Provide flexibility when possible so that Initiates can meet expectations and become a Member.
Onboarding New Members
Best Practices in Onboarding New Members ● Ask Initiates to share their input about how to improve Recruitment and the Initiation Program. ● Engage new Members in committee activities where they can use their skills and talents to contribute. ● Help new Members to set goals for their first year as an active Member and provide an opportunity to reflect. ● Meet with the new Members at the beginning of their first term as an active Member to check in. ● Encourage new Members to become LiA Facilitators.
Retaining Members
Best Practices in Retaining Members ● Utilize the Brother at Large to follow-up with Members who are struggling with attendance or meeting expectations. ● Adhere to policies and provide for flexibility with Members. ● Follow the Due Process Flow Chart for all discipline-related issues to ensure that Members have a chance to improve. ● Take advantage of on campus resources to mediate interpersonal conflicts. ● Demonstrate that you value Brotherhood for Life when creating policies and putting them into practice.
