National School Library Program of the Year 2012 District 86 Library Mission Statement Teach all of our students to thoughtfully inquire about the world around them, efficiently seek information which addresses those inquiries, critically evaluate the quality of that information, capably apply the knowledge acquired to new problems, questions, or ideas, and objectively assess the work they produce as a result of the research process. Collaborate with other teachers to design and implement lessons and assessments which challenge our students to become effective users of ideas and information, perhaps the single most important 21st century skill. How about this Provide leadership, instruction , and expertise in the use of information and technology that encourages creative problem solving and ethical, socially responsible sharing of information. Provide access to a variety of quality resources which support the curriculum and meet the diverse needs and interests of our school community in a vibrant learning environment equipped for the demands of 21st century teaching and learning. So why is library instruction essential? BECAUSE THE MAJORITY OF COLLEGE FRESHMEN DO NOT FEEL PREPARED FOR COLLEGE LEVEL RESEARCH EXPECTATIONS. Libraries Transform http://www.ilovelibraries.org/librariestransform/because Strong School Libraries Build Strong Students Over 21 state studies confirm that school librarians and school libraries support students in academic achievement, lifelong learning, 21st century skills, and reading. School libraries provide equitable physical and intellectual access to the resources and tools required for learning in a warm, stimulating, and safe environment. Student test scores were higher the more time librarians worked cooperatively with classroom teachers, the more they taught information literacy independently, and the more they provided in-service training to teachers.
