SA SDI Alliance - Com m unity Networks  Inform al Settlem ent Network (ISN)  Bottom-up agglomeration of more than 600 settlements across the country  Mobilises communities around issue-based upgrading agenda and develops capacity  Active in five major metropolitan areas as well as a number of smaller municipalities  Federation of the Urban and Rural Poor (FEDUP)  National network of 800+ woman-led savings schemes  Built more than 15,000 houses since 1991  Collective action towards policy change, eg “People’s  Housing Process”

SA SDI Alliance - Support NGOs  Com m unity Organisation Resource Centre (CORC)  Provides a platform for information exchange and technical support to ISN and FEDUP  Supports ISN and FEDUP in influencing resource allocation towards more pro-poor and inclusive cities  uTshani Fund  A formal bridging finance institution providing loans and grants towards community-initiatives  Pre-financing of EPHP projects but also runs CUFF which funds in-situ upgrading projects in informal settlements

FEDUP and ISN in eThekwini  FEDUP:  Building communities through women-centred savings groups  Constructing precedent -setting houses (Govan Mbeki KZN award for Namibia Stop 8 EPHP project)  Participating in Provincial Joint Working Group meetings  ISN:  Profiling informal settlements across the Municipality  Mobilising settlements through com m unity-im plem ented enum erations and com m unity savings for development  Implementing com m unity-led upgrading projects ranging from water drainage , through community facilities such as creches, to ‘reblocking’ of settlements  Engaging with local government eg Water and Sanitation, Housing Support Unit, Fire and Disaster Management
