How do I access these resources? • All databases are available through the library catalogue and therefore available off campus (login with your UTOR ID) • Note: They are generally not searchable via the catalogue, you have to look up the database name and search within • Two shortcuts: • Entrepreneurship LibGuide‐ Carey Toane has put this together and it’s an excellent resources for exploring industry, market research and company research • Rotman Milt Harris Library Website – Databases by Subject links to all key business databases
Types of Reports • Companies: annual reports, company profiles, analyst reports, SWOT analysis, ratios, financial data • Industry Reports • Market Research Reports • Data: Demographic, product research, financial (public companies)
Company Research • Only public companies have to disclose their finances; private companies do not have to disclose anything • The Ontario Securities Commission has some helpful reports/definitions if you’re new to this research. Try Researching Your Investments or Disclosure Documents Source: Ontario Securities Commission. “Researching Your Investments” http://www.osc.gov.on.ca/documents/en/Investors/res_res earch‐invest_en.pdf
Using Industry Codes for Company Research • Using an industry code (usually NAICS or SIC) you can compile lists of companies operating within a certain industry • CB Insights for start‐ups and venture capital • Try LexisNexis, Mergent or Capital IQ (available in Rotman Finance Lab) • To find the NAICS or SIC code, check Statistics Canada for NAICS (http://www23.statcan.gc.ca/imdb/p3VD.pl?Function=getVD&TVD= 380372) or US Department of Labor for SIC codes https://www.osha.gov/pls/imis/sicsearch.html • Some databases assign their own codes or let you search by keyword
Challenges • Is it a niche industry? • How new is this technology or industry? • What industry are competitors classified under? • Are there broader industry reports? • Glucose tracking monitor falls under wearables or medical devices • An app to track learning initiatives in students falls under education • An innovation on steering wheel technology falls under car parts and accessories
