History of Cabrillo College • 1958 Santa Cruz County approved a two year college • 1959 The new college's Governing Board, (elected in January 1959) chose the name "Cabrillo College” • 800 day and evening students enrolled in freshman classes at the Watsonville High School • 1960 A sophomore class was added • Present site selected by Governing Board and Committee • $6.5 million bond issue proposed; 77% “yes” vote to bond, June, 1960

  4. Aptos Campus 1961-62 • Construction of the Aptos campus began in 1961 • Phase I, II & III construction o Buildings 100, 200, 300, 500, 600, 700, 900, 1000 & 1100 • More than 2,000 day and evening students enrolled in September 1962. • The campus was built to accommodate 2,500 students.

  5. Aptos Campus 1965-66 • District voters gave an 81% "yes" vote on a $1.1 million bond issue in April 1965 for expansion. • Construction of three additional major classroom structures began in 1966. • Phase IV Construction o Buildings 400, 450 & 800 • Capacity increased to 5,000 students.

  6. Cabrillo College 1972-73 • State Community College Construction funds make a second expansion of campus facilities possible. Approval of state community college construction funds in November 1972 o The passage of a local matching fund bond of $3 million in April 1973. o • Twenty acres of property on the ocean side of Soquel Drive were purchased, and four new buildings were constructed. o 1300 building o 1400 Building o 1500/1550 Building o 1600 Building

Cabrillo College 1987-93 • In fall 1987, Watsonville Center opened--a major expansion in off-campus offerings. • In the 1990s, a few buildings were remodeled that housed technology- related instruction due to an increase in funding for schools. o Barrier Removal ADA Access o 350 Building Photolab o 900 cafeteria kitchen o 1000 Building LRC expansion o 1700 Building Baskin Childcare o 1800 Building Sesnon House restoration • In 1993 the old Watsonville Post Office was remodeled by the City of Watsonville to house the Cabrillo Watsonville Center.

Cabrillo College 1998-02 • Measure C Measure C passed in June of 1998 o Campus repairs, renovations and expansion begin o Expansion of outreach facilities to include Watsonville o Addition of a two story parking structure and a road realignment o project. This would make way for the new Student Activities Center and the Visual Applied & Performing Arts Complex. The Watsonville Center re-opened in the remodeled Post Office and o Comerica Bank site in the fall of 2001 in order to build the 3 story building. The Environmental Horticulture Center and Botanic Gardens opened o in fall 2002

Cabrillo College 2004 Measure D Passes • A $118.5 million bond measure approved in March 2004: o Health careers training programs expanded o Classrooms improvements o Watsonville Center expansion o Create a presence in Scotts Valley Center  (More than 600 students enrolled in the opening semester 2007). o Student Activities Center construction moves forward  (October 2007 Barbara Samper Student Activities Center opened)
