“Bayern, mein Heimatland ”: Heimat and the Forging of a Bavarian Identity in the Age of Romanticism Joshua W. Stein HIST-491-01: Research December 15, 2017
King Maximilian II’s Journey
Thesis This paper argues that through the ideas of Heimat and Romantic Nationalism as apparent in landscape paintings, Bavarian Royal Officials and members of the Bavarian upper class intentionally created a unique cultural identity that differed from its surrounding neighbors between the years of 1805 and 1900. More specifically, grounded in an analysis of landscape paintings, I argue that such an identity emerged based on the incorporation of local differences and in opposition to Prussian and Austrian identities.
