Edlund American Contemporary ROMANTICISM IN CELEBRATION OF THE AMERICAN LANDSCAPE Edlund’s paintings are about the beauty of the natural world as well as the craft of painting itself. They value the characteristics present in composition, varied textures, and the power of light and color. The paintings convey overlaps of specific moments in time that together capture the "enduring beauty of nature." We may be witnessing last month’s wildflowers superimposed on last evening’s indigo twilight and this morning’s sun. Like a master chef, it is Edlund’s combination of them that elevates us above the singular components, so that we land somewhere above the realm of day-to-day experience. Edlund’s scenes of stillness and luminosity suggest a slight enchantment. They are an exclamation of wonder with the meandering paths and waters as avenues of enticement. Many of the landscapes are without a protagonist, allowing us to walk into the space in solitude, to stand in the grass at the edge of the field, to feel the warmth of the sun and the cool of the shade, to smell the fresh air. Yet, there is an unreachable quality in the paintings that hints at fragility and times long past – perhaps a road we took once, or a landscape more interior. Edlund leaves it up to us, whether the scene is a relic from our past or a brand new site of adventure. Carolyn H. Edlund is a master artist known and collected internationally.
