WBL EXAMPLES: ANNUAL STUDENT EVENTS Automotive Skills Day May The Cuyamaca College Automotive Technology Department organizes the longest running Automotive Skills Day competition in San Diego County (since 1979!). One Day Event: 8 AM - 1 PM Program consist of a series of breakout sessions: Skills Competitions o People’s Choice Car Club Show o STEM Demonstrations Math and Science o Job Preparation Interviews o Fun Automotive Games and Challenges o Lunch o Awards o
WBL EXAMPLES: ANNUAL STUDENT EVENTS Men In Nursing Approximately 140 high school health career pathway students attended the annual Men in Nursing Student Conference at Grossmont College. One Day Event: 8 AM - 2 PM The day consists of: a keynote presentation o various interactive breakout sessions o nursing program college booths o an industry panel presentation o
WBL EXAMPLES: ANNUAL STUDENT EVENTS Codechella This is a regional event for middle and high school students to participate in a coding competition at San Diego City College. One Day Event: 8:30AM – 12:30 PM They work in teams of two to code either a dancing Aldebaran Nao o Robot or a maze racing Sphero! It is a great opportunity for students to work with ICT professionals as o mentors and judges for the competition. Collaborative event with JA San Diego, DSN ICT and CTE Regional o Pathways.
WBL EXAMPLES: GUEST SPEAKERS Global Trade & Logistics – Guest Speaker Duration: 60 to 90 minutes – varies classrooms Activity consists of a presentation by ICC and Industry Specialist/Partner: Introductions o What is Global Trade and Manufacturing? o Work/Career background of Industry Partner o Presentation of college options in the region o Q&A o
WBL EXAMPLES: INDUSTRY TOURS Advanced Manufacturing – Industry Tour Duration: 2 to 4 hours – FOX Racing & Andrew-Williamson Activity consists of touring a manufacturing facility. These activities allow students to experience first-hand the types of career opportunities available in manufacturing sectors.

WBL EXAMPLES: PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT HASPI E I Educator C or Confere rence Teachers are invited to join us for a day of HASPI – learning about successful practices in health pathway education at the Marina Village Conference Center. One Day Event: 8 AM - 2 PM Teachers enjoyed a keynote presentation and various interactive HASPI lab breakout sessions.
WHY WORK BASED LEARNING? Obvious disconnect between high school and college & careers: • 33% of 848 small-business owners and chief executives said they had unfilled job openings because they couldn't identify qualified applicants (WSJ-San Diego) • By 2020, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics predicts there will be 1 million more computer science jobs than graduating students qualified for them Connect what they’re doing in school with the real world and they’re more likely to graduate and enroll in college • Higher attendance and graduation rates • Minority students participating in WBL entered college at twice the rate of non-participating minority students • Higher rates of adult employment success for all categories of disability
