  3. Task 1 about when you start work • Work in a group of 2 or 3. Rank in order the things you think will be easiest and hardest to do. 1 is easiest and 10 is hardest. Coping with health and safety, working with people you have not met before, travel to work, working as part of a team, good time keeping, dealing with the public, being reliable, making mistakes, wearing suitable clothes and handling money/business issues.

  4. Own Placements deadline is Friday 17 th May 2019. Own placements: • family business. • some jobs are very popular. • you know your career path. • you want to be in control. • you want to save being disappointed at the last minute. • if you change your mind your parents will be asked to pay a fee.

  5. Own Placements Task 2 . • Discuss your ideas for an ‘own placement’ in a group of 2 or 3. • If you have your own placement form with you fill out your section now and ask your tutor to fill in their section during tutor time today. Check the form with your tutor. • Take your form to Mrs Rickson as soon as possible.

  6. Timeline. Task 3. Write these dates in your planner or calendar. • April 2019 Letters, booklet and ‘own placement forms’ sent home. May 10 th Assembly. • • Return own placement forms before the half term holidays. The deadline is Friday 17 th May. • May/June 2019 – U-Explore/Journey to Work. • May 2019 – tutor time about careers. • June 5th 2019 – Parents Evening and online system goes live and pupils complete fields to get best possible placements. You get two selections. Think about what you want and where you live in relation to the placement. Reselection if needed. Do not delay. June 7 th Assembly – Database system. •

  7. Timeline: • September 2019 onwards. Develop send blue forms confirming work experience placement. • November / December 2019. Visits and interviews at placements. Further assemblies. • Monday January 13 th 2020 Work Experience starts. • From January 16th 2020 visits by teachers/other staff.

  8. Work Place skills Task 4 • Select the most 5 important skills needed for success at work. Compare your list with your group of 2 or 3. • Reliability • Honesty, • Positive approach, • Keen to learn, • Good listening skills, • Good body language, • Flexibility, • Initiative, • Team work, • Being decisive. • Being organised.

  9. Career Planning Task 5. • Think about your ‘ideal job’. What personal skills are needed for this job? What qualifications are needed for this job? Would you need to study at university in order to do this job? What are the main duties of this job? Reflect on your recent U Explore session.

  10. Support Checklist Task 6 • You will have support from Mrs Rickson who is based in B101, your tutor, HOY, pastoral assistant, your mentor and your parents. Who have you discussed work experience with so far?

  11. Develop Class Task 7 • The school pays Develop to organise work experience placements. The website is http://develop.learnaboutwork.net/index. asp • You should have a quick look at this website this morning as a class.

Interview Planning Task 8 • What will you say when you phone for an interview? • What will you do if you can’t get hold of your contact on the phone? • Who can help you if you find making the phone call difficult? • What are the negatives about work experience? • Will work experience be ‘better’ than school?

  13. Interview Planning Task 9 Work in small groups to come up with answers to these typical questions. • What can you tell me about yourself? • Can you list your strengths? • What weaknesses do you have? • Why should I consider you for this placement? • Where do you see yourself five years from now? • Why do you want to work in this job?

  14. Work Place Rules Task 10 • The placement is inviting you in to their place of work and you are there at their invitation. • What rules should you follow so you act in professional manner? Use the headings below as a guide. • How shall I act? • How should I dress? • Mobile phone etiquette? • Social media use? • How will you create a professional impression when you first arrive?
