  2. REASONING • Ever since I was young I had an interest in fashion design • Started to show interest in high school • It was originally my first career choice

  3. HISTORY • Charles Frederick Worth was the first designer to have his label sown onto the garments he created • Only clothing created after 1858 can be considered as ”fashion design”

  4. CHARLES FREDERICK WORTH • Began his own fashion house • Broke “typical” fashion rules • Started the fashion house trend • Known for his use of lavish fabrics and form fitting designs

  5. MARIE ANTOINETTE • Queen of France • Major fashion icon during her time • Used her fashion as a way to combat her enemies • Never wore anything twice • Wanted fashion independence

  6. ROSE BERTIN • Marie Antoinette's dress maker • Described as the ”fashion minister” by the queen • Her creations established France as the center of the fashion industry • Became a powerful figure in court

  9. WHAT DOES A FASHION DESIGNER DO? • Study fashion trends • Sketch ideas out • Select specific fabrics for their designs • Attend trade shows • Oversee the entire garment production- from the initial sketch to final manufacturing

  10. COMMUNICATION • Communication is KEY • Travel is necessary since fashion clients and retailors are all over the world • Team discussions • Meetings • Skype or Zoom calls • E-mail/text/phone conversations

  11. DUTIES • Decide on a theme for a collection • Use CAD programs to create designs • Work with other designers or team members to create prototype designs • Present design ideas to the creative director • Market designs to clothing retailers • Oversee the final production of their designs

  12. QUALIFICATIONS • An associate or a bachelor's degree in fashion design • A business, marketing, or fashion merchandising degree • Must have a strong sense of the esthetic • An eye for color and detail • A sense of balance and proportion • An appreciation for beauty

  13. EARNINGS • Typical salary: $35.54 for an hour or $73,000 a year

  14. LOCATION • Most fashion design jobs are located in large cities • New York • London • Paris

  15. WORKING CONDITIONS • Spacious office • Good lighting • Clean • Ample clothes racks and mannequins

  16. TEAMS • Teams are made up of other designers, seamstresses, and pattern makers • A project manager or head designer oversees the team

  17. HOURS • Long hours during the week and weekends • Must be flexible in scheduling meetings with clients • Extra time outside of office hours are devoted to fashion shows, travel, and marketing their design and products

  18. MARKET • Employment of fashion designers is projected to grow 3% from 2014 to 2024 • Declining employment in the apparel manufacturing industry • Experienced designers may advance to upper level employees

CMU FASHION CAMP • Fashion Camp is seeking aspiring fashion designers and creators • Students will put on a fashion show • Collaborate with professionals • Work with other CMU students • Get to know CMU's Fashion Merchandising and Design facilities on campus. • Camp Duration: June 25, 2017 (Sunday) - June 30, 2017 (Friday)

  20. FASHION ASSOCIATION OF MERCHANDISING AND DESIGN (FAMD) • Organization for students planning a career in fashion and the retail industry • The group encourages creativity, passion and professionalism as members gain industry experience through travel and fashion design planning

  21. THE AMERICAN ASSOCIATION OF TEXTILE CHEMISTS AND COLORISTS (AATCC) • - An organization for students interested in textiles • - Chapter members collaborate with other groups on campus • - Hold local contests to promote better understanding of selecting and using textiles.

  22. WHAT I LEARNED? • Fashion designers do not make nearly enough money • Low salary • After doing this research I have realized that this career is not for me although, it would be fun • A lot of travel is involved • Internship = crucial
