THE ¡LANDSCAPE We ¡are ¡witnessing ¡an ¡ emerging ¡ social ¡ technology-­‑based ¡ movement, ¡the ¡so-­‑called ¡ ‘Maker ¡movement’ spreading ¡fast ¡across ¡the ¡ world. The ¡availability ¡of ¡open ¡platforms, ¡easy-­‑to ¡use ¡and ¡cheap ¡tools ¡such ¡as ¡3-­‑D ¡ printers, ¡computer ¡numeric ¡control ¡(CNC) ¡machines, ¡CAD ¡software ¡and ¡ electronics ¡assembly ¡allow ¡individuals ¡to ¡produce ¡objects ¡quickly ¡and ¡cheaply. ¡ Web-­‑based ¡collaboration, ¡open ¡source ¡design, ¡internet ¡distribution ¡and ¡the ¡ possibility ¡to ¡scale ¡prototypes ¡into ¡full ¡production ¡runs ¡by ¡means ¡of ¡outsourcing, ¡ are ¡turning ¡makers ¡into ¡manufacturers.

WHY -­‑ New business models : technology driven, sustainable, socially oriented > Business as a service -­‑ New products and production processes: UX – data management -­‑ New governance frameworks for innovation : bottom-­‑up, distributed, decentralized -­‑ Openness as an enabling factor – diffused access to assets, knowledge exchange and collective intelligence

OUR ¡CHALLENGE OD&M’s challenge is to embed key approaches, values and principles of the Open Design & Manufacturing paradigm within an Alliance between Universities, manufacturers and makers in the co-­‑construction of knowledge and skills leading to a competitive, sustainable and innovation-­‑led European manufacturing sector.

HOW Ø A preliminary research to identify knowledge and key competences associated to the OD&M – inspired by the maker movement and makerspaces; Ø Design, pilot and assess a structured programme of training, events and transnational mobilities for students ; Ø Model the OD&M value proposition into a structured and long-­‑term Alliance that offers dedicated trainings, events and mobilities for all the actors involved
