Mes essages es From Some O e Of O Our S Subjec ect H Hea eads - Marycla lair ire O Odoric ico ● HISTORY/ Stacey Richardson, Subject Head ○ We're all working hard to stay connected to our students and provide meaningful learning opportunities. We are doing the best we can and send everyone our well wishes!! ● FAMILY STUDIES/ Tania Haber, Subject Head ○ Our team recognizes the difficulties and challenges that have resulted in this pandemic. I personally am so proud of the students for really stepping up to the plate and persevering. Majority of the students are still doing work - they respond and we connect. Teachers in my department are really working hard and still continuing to make connections and being flexible and supportive. I know how extremely difficult it has been for our Grade 12s with the disappointments of their last year...but Family Studies sends much love, health, happiness, hope and laughter to each and every student in our ECSS community. We are thinking of all of them and can't wait to see their faces in the halls one day at ECSS. Wish everyone a safe and happy summer : )
Mes essages es From Some O e Of O Our S Subjec ect H Hea eads - Marycla lair ire O Odoric ico ● ENGLISH/ Sarah Caporiccio, Subject Head ○ Our department has been agile instituting emergency response in this pandemic, to create our best practices ensuring continuity for our students. I am really proud of all our efforts so far and applaud the whole department for their collegiality, team work, and good spirits, in order to ensure the best conditions that help the students steady themselves on the path to learning. ● PHYSICAL EDUCATION/ Angela Wilman, Subject Head ○ Teaching Phys.Ed on-line during COVI D19 has definitely had its challenges. I am very fortunate to have such a great department that really came together to collaborate. We have had to be very creative when coming up with tasks for the students to keep them engaged as well as covering the expectations. It did take some time until we came up with a plan that works for everyone, keeping it consistent across all our classes. The kids’ feedback has been that they are really enjoying it, so that is a plus!
Mes essages es From Some O e Of O Our S Subjec ect H Hea eads - Marycla lair ire O Odoric ico ● ART/ Serafina Farrugia, Subject Head ○ Our art team has been wonderful during this emergency learning. We have kept our students engaged throughout distance learning, and the work that students have been producing has been making us very proud. We have created slideshows of student work that we share with our students, and Admin. We also invited Grade 10 and 11 students to have their work on display on social media accounts (ECSS instagram, ECSS and Board twitter accounts) with parental consent. We modified assignments to challenge students to be creative with materials they had at home (grade 9s created sculptures of "protective animals" out of food or recycled materials), and have been so pleased with their slideshows that show their creative thinking and process along the way. We received positive feedback from students and parents regarding how art has been a creative outlet for them during this time. ● GUI DANCE/ Fiorella Finelli, Subject Head ○ Continuing Education Services is adjusting its Summer Learning program offerings to align with Public Health guidelines and Ministry Direction. ● Summer School e-Learning will be offered in the same format as in previous summers. ● Traditional in class face-to-face summer programs will move to a remote learning delivery model with synchronous learning. This is similar to our current learning model which aligns with our Learning and Caring Plan.
Mes essages es From Some O e Of O Our S Subjec ect H Hea eads - Marycla lair ire O Odoric ico ● SCIENCE/ Chang Oh, Subject Head ○ Students and parents thank you for all your efforts in this trying time; managing school, home life, friendships and personal health (mentally and physically) ○ I'm really impressed with your resiliency and passion for school despite of all these trials ○ Please continue to stay healthy: mind and body ○ We will get through this together and in the end be stronger from it ○ At anytime, if you need support from your teachers, please don't hesitate to contact us; we are ready, available and eager to support you in any way you need ● INTERNATIONAL LANGUAGES/ Kim Skidmore, Subject Head ○ The Languages Department just wants to say how proud we are of the work that our students have been doing. We know that the best way to learn a language is to immersed in it and speak and listen to it with other people. That may not be possible right now, but we've tried to step up and make our online learning as engaging as possible. We know this form of learning is full of challenges for everyone and they have stepped up! We also recognize the disappointment they must feel by missing out on so many school activities like sports, clubs, prom, and graduation and we miss these things as well. Above all we miss our students and cannot wait to talk their ears off (en francais!) in the fall.
Mes essages es From Some O e Of O Our S Subjec ect H Hea eads - Marycla lair ire O Odoric ico ● MATH/ Sawsan Al-Hassani, Subject Head ○ I struggled at the beginning to figure out how to make assessment with google forms and it took me a while to figure it out but we have a What's App Math group with old and new teachers, we share what we learn, and know, and laugh, so it helps! Students still interact via emails, class and private comments. Emoji’s make it less stressful. The first time I made a video lesson, I asked my students to give me some feedback about it. One of them said, “It is better than Netflix" LOL! I prepare daily videos for my students, some of them are lessons and some of them are just questions that the students ask me to take up. We also give formative and summative assessments just like how we do at school. We mark them and give feedback. On the other hand some students are facing challenges, and do not participate as much, but we keep staying connected through emails to parents, phone calls home, which helps. We are saying goodbye to four of our wonderful teachers, and will be doing a send-off with my assistant head, Alyson, in a special way. I hope this gives you an idea of what is happening in math. ● BUSINESS/ Mike Ioannou, Subject Head ○ From our business department, I would like to extend our greetings. We are appreciative that students and parents are patient with us, and helped us transition to this remote learning model. We recognize that it was frustrating at times, and we could not have gotten through this semester without everyone working closely together. I believe that is a testament to our school community at Emily Carr, which includes our students and parents, our admin team, colleagues, and support staff - our learning and caring community.
