Can ʼ t We Get These Two Together?
• A pro bono data scientist exchange • Socially conscious data scientists work short or long-term with non-profits/NGOs in both fellowship and contract form. • Deals with all parts of the data pipeline: • collection • management • analysis • visualization • privacy/access
Goals • Immediate Assistance : Help NGOs who don ʼ t have the resources to analyze their data on their own. • Skill Transfer : Train NGOs in proper data collection, management, analysis techniques for future projects. • Create Community : Show NGOs the power of data and the importance of opening it and sharing it with the broader community.
Process • Long term • Fellowships: 6-12 month permanent placements • Sponsored company time: Google ʼ s 20%, but for pro bono work. • Remote spare time: Weeknights / weekends • Short term • Datadives: Weekend long collaborations with a small set of NGOs on their data problems.
Datadives NGOs bring their data, and excited data hackers bring their ideas. • Quick Wins: Only 24-48 hours, so we ʼ re looking to help bring quick insights to groups with good data. • Not a “hackathon”: End result doesn ʼ t have to be software. Could be a visualization, a statistical analysis, a consultation, an API, etc. • Collaborative: NGOs don ʼ t just throw data over the wall - work on teams with data experts. • Educational: By working together, the NGO and data scientist communities learn from each other through open discourse.
