  3. E NERGY F LAGSHIP P ROJECT 1 1. Solar Energy Park Concept The Solar Energy Park will be situated in Upington, a thriving town on the banks of the Orange River and on the fringe of the Kalahari Desert, Northern Cape province. The Clinton Climate Initiative completed a Pre-Feasibility Study in May 2010 for the DoE to assess the viability of utility scale solar parks in South Africa. The conclusion of the study was that, over the next decade, solar power could be deployed in large quantities at costs competitive with coal-fired power with a target of 5 GW of generation by 2020. A Solar Park is a concentrated zone of clustered solar electricity plants that deliver power to the grid via a common connection. The goal is to significantly decrease the cost of solar power through economies of scale, sharing of common services and utilities and the potential use of locally manufactured components. The Northern Cape was identified as the best location for such a project, due to its consistent solar radiation, flat and sparsely populated land, good transport and the Orange River as a reliable water source. The proposed “Northern Cape Solar Corridor” includes sites near Upington, Groblershoop, Prieska and De Aar. Flagship Projects

  4. E NERGY F LAGSHIP P ROJECT 2 2. Roll-out of Solar Water Heating South Africa is facing an electricity shortage with the demand for electricity growing beyond what Eskom can supply. In order to mitigate system restraints, Eskom has various programmes promoting energy efficiency and the use of alternative energy. Promoting the use of sustainable resources is important if South Africa is to reach its energy savings targets set by the South African government, which requires renewable energy to replace 10,000 GWh of electricity by 2013. The Department of Energy estimates that 23% of this target can be met through solar water heating and Eskom is therefore actively encouraging consumers to switch to solar water heating. 5. E NERGY F LAGSHIP P ROJECT 3 3. Municipal Energy Efficiency and Demand Side Management (EEDSM) programme The project replaces inefficient building, traffic and street lights with energy efficient technologies. In addition, low-pressure Solar Water Heating systems are installed in low-income households. Eskom drives large scale mass roll-outs of Energy Efficiency Demand Side Management (EEDSM) programmes, which focus on identifying and promoting more efficient ways to use electricity, through the implementation of technology enhancements and behaviour change. The majority of savings in the residential sector have been achieved through the implementation of large-scale mass rollouts replacing incandescent light bulbs with compact fluorescent lamps (CFLs) and, up until the end of the 2010/2011 financial year, over 47 million CFLs had been installed in the residential sector nationwide, bringing about demand savings of 1,958 MW and creating over 30,000 temporary jobs nationally. 6. E NERGY F LAGSHIP P ROJECT 4 4. Comprehensive Community Solar Energy Project, Northern Cape The project COCOSOL is a rural electrification initiative with the main goal to rollout community driven solar energy home systems that can offer real alternatives for energy for basic applications such as lighting, safety, security and education. The project tests and demonstrates in practice, new approaches, technologies and project or business ideas on rural electrification. Under this project 200 Solar Home Systems (SHS) and 10 street lights have been installed. This pilot and demonstration project started in December 2010 and ended in October 2011. It was funded by the Energy and Environment Partnership Programme with Southern and Eastern Africa (EEP-S&EA) www.eepafrica.org and Provincial Government of the Northern Cape. This project is employing use of solar home power systems as well as solar street lights. The solar home system includes 100Wp solar panel, 100AH/12V deep cycle battery, 4-5 LED lights, light switches, controller, and a 300W/220V inverter that allows small appliances including TV, DSTV, hi-fi, radio and a few small fridges to be connected. 7. E NERGY F LAGSHIP P ROJECT 5 5. SA Wind Projects 100 MW Sere Eskom Wind Eskom is currently constructing the Sere wind farm, its flagship renewable project, in the Western Cape, which demonstrates the utility’s commitment to sustainable development and its pledge to move towards a cleaner energy future by reducing its dependence on coal and diversify its energy mix. Coega / Nelson Mandela Metro In May 2010 the first 1.8Megawatt turbine was completed and linked to the grid, and was utilised to power the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium with electricity during the FIFA World Cup. SANEDI Wind Atlas The objective of the project was to improve knowledge and quality of wind resource assessment methods and tools, as well as to ensure availability of tools and data for planning and application for wind farm developments, off-grid electrification and extreme wind studies. 8. E NERGY F LAGSHIP P ROJECT 6 6. Low Energy Modular Low Cost Housing & Ekurhuleni Low Carbon Low Cost Housing The project includes the construction of low carbon, low energy, low cost houses utilising an innovative high strength concrete performance system. The system is based on the use of the prefabricated modular elements using High Performance Concrete and high efficient insulating materials The project is implemented in corporation with LTE Energy . It is located in O.R Tambo Narrative and Environmental Centre, Wattvile, Benoni in Gauteng Province. Flagship Projects
