  2. WHAT IS CPD ? CPD STANDS FOR CONTINUING PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  3. 1. INTRODUCTION Professional standards are the cornerstone of a professional body. IOWA recognises the importance of Continuing Professional Development (CPD) in maintaining and raising members professional standards. IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  4. 2. WHAT IS CPD Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is timely professional updating. It is the process of lifelong learning for professionals. A definition of CPD is: “The systematic maintenance , enhancement and development of knowledge and skill, and the development of personal qualities necessary for the execution of professional and technical duties throughout a practising professional's career.” IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  5. CPD is especially concerned with development of real value to the professional. On joining IOWA, all members make a fundamental commitment to ongoing self-improvement. It is this underpinning ethos – the professional obligation to learn - that is a decisive contributor to the credibility in society of the environmental professional and the environmental profession. IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  6. 3. WHY CPD CPD brings significant benefits to members and the environmental profession itself as well as employers and society as a whole. In an environment of rapidly changing technology, more demanding consumers and greater scrutiny on professionals and organisations alike; IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  7. CPD helps: • Demonstrate a commitment to maintaining and developing professional standards • Attain Professional Titles • Protect consumers • Protect the public interest • Increase client satisfaction • Increase effectiveness • Deliver high performance • Enhance job satisfaction • Promote the reputation of the profession IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  8. We are working in industries directly linked to public health, safety, risk and high-level public investment, this places an obligation on members to maintain and develop their knowledge, expertise and experience. IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  9. 4. IOWA & CPD Current IOWA Continuing Professional Development Policy; As you are probably aware, IOWA publishes a list of members on the association website (www.iowa.ie) who are FETAC approved site assessors and who have applied to join the list in accordance with our stated criteria. This follows the decision by many County Councils some time ago not to publish individual County panels of approved site assessors. We would like to continue providing the IOWA list of FETAC approved site assessors on the IOWA website, as a service to our members and to the general public. In order to assist those members on the IOWA list the committee would like the members to keep up to date with the many changes that continuously occur within our industry. Continuous Professional Development (CPD) is a useful quality requirement in many other professional fields whereby members must attend events that are directly relevant to their work and are quality approved by their associations. IOWA would like to adopt the CPD concept as a means of progressing our aims to ensure that suitable professional training programmes can be provided for the benefit of our members. Such programmes are essential to ensure the highest professional standards apply within our industry. Following on from the 2016 IOWA Annual Conference, it was decided at the IOWA Committee Meeting on the 23 rd November, 2016 that a minimum of 8 hours CPD will be a requirement in order for IOWA Members to remain on the IOWA List of Site Suitability Assessors. The requirement will come into effect from the 1 st October, 2017 and the period of compliance will be 01/10/2017 to 30/09/2018. IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'

  10. The IOWA Annual Conference carries 8 hours CPD training, so attendance at the 2017 Conference will satisfy the annual requirement for 2017. Additionally, there are a number of relevant training courses and seminars and other CPD approved events organised and run by the EPA and by the Local Authority Services National Training Group (LASNTG), as well as other associations, that will satisfy the IOWA list CPD requirement. As outlined at the 2016 Conference (the IOWA/EPA Engagement strategy), following this decision by the IOWA Committee, we will be actively pursuing inclusion for all IOWA members for relevant events when invitations are being issued by the EPA and the LASNTG for training courses or workshops relevant to the domestic wastewater treatment industry. In order to encourage members to engage in the CPD initiative there will be a voluntary introductory scheme which will commence on the 15 th January, 2017 and run until 30 th September, 2017. Any members who sign up and register for this voluntary scheme before the 15 th January, 2017 will be allowed include any relevant CPD training recorded within this period as part of their 8 hours CPD when the official scheme comes into effect on October 1 st , 2017. Please email Susan at susan@smartofficeservices.ie to register for this voluntary scheme. The CPD concept will initially only apply to IOWA members who are included on the IOWA List of Site Assessors, but it is hoped that this will extend to system installers, system certifiers and other categories of IOWA members in the future. This initiative will greatly assist IOWA in their pursuit of suitable training programmes for all categories of members. IOWA 2018 Annual Conference ' INTSALLATION, CERTIFICATION & LIABILITY'
