Some of the WHY’s for bringing these pathways forward include: In March of 2017, the school board approved recommendations for the Gifted and Talented Study. Two of those recommendations included increased attention to: Providing acceleration opportunities for mastery of grade level content ● and beyond at a pace and depth appropriate to the capacity of the K-12 learner Providing authentic learning opportunities to ignite passion and ● interests of students in and beyond core academics .
More Rationale - The Next Generation Science Standards Why are we offering these new Pathways? Beginning in 2020, the District will embark upon the Next Generation Science Standards Curriculum Review process. This affords new opportunities to all Edina students in how they experience Science learning in their K12 journey. These standards will be passed into law in May. The What... What are Pathway Options 1 and 2? Both Courses: Have high expectations for students ● Engage in Minnesota state standards ● Meet students at their level ● Prepare students for high-level science in high school ●
Pathway 1 - Depth and Complexity Pathway 2 - Breadth Covers 3 years of science standards in 3 years Covers 3 years of science standards in 2 years Personalized approach aligned with individual Personalized approach aligned with individual student needs around depth and complexity student needs around pacing and demonstration of competencies Allows time to go deeper into standards with May require time outside of class to keep up with embedded enrichment and review opportunities the pace of the course Incorporates more time for experimentation Incorporates less repetition and less time for experimentation Incorporates math at grade level appropriate math Incorporates math learned in single accelerated math pathways Prepares students to take Physics as a 9th grader Prepares the student to take Physics as an 8th (***The Sci course sequence may change with the grader new standards being finalized in May.)
The What... What are the reasons to choose Pathway 1 or 2? Pathway 1: Depth Pathway 2: Breadth -After showing competency, I -After showing competency, I Consider this course like to have more time to dig like to move to the next if… into science content. standard. -I enjoy exploring concepts -I enjoy learning at a rapid more deeply. pace with less repetition. -Investigations help me learn -I can understand science science. with fewer investigations.
Process for Determining Course Fit ● Indication of interest on the registration form (due Feb. 28) ● Completion of a Self-Assessment (to be completed later this spring April 30) ● Academic Readiness
