  8. DUKE OF EDINBURGH PROGRAM • Students in this program are expected to complete the entire semester • Application process is outlined in the handbook  Application forms on Compass – DUE Friday 4 th August  See Ruth Corry in Room 11

  9. ARTS ELECTIVE Students must complete 1 Art elective in Year 9 • Computers in Art • Ceramics • Media • Graphic Art • Drama • Music

EXTRA ELECTIVES • Students complete 2 further elective subjects of their choice • They can come from the list below, or students can choose any other elective up to a maximum of 3 from the one faculty HUMANITIES SCIENCE Learning to Lead Sustainability ENGLISH LOTE Creative Writing & French & Debate, Discussion and Public Indonesian Speaking

  11. BRIDGING ENGLISH & BRIDGING MATHS • Open to all students  Recommended for students who have completed the school’s Literacy and Numeracy programs in Junior School.

  12. ATHLETE DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (ADP) • See Alistair Stuart (Head of PASE) in Room 11 for more information  Requires an application. Forms available on Compass – DUE Friday 4 th August  A fitness test – will be held Monday 7 th August

YEAR 10 COURSE STRUCTURE • Students complete 6 subjects per semester – equivalent of 12 units over the course of the year • All subjects are for 5 periods a week • English and Mathematics are compulsory and are taken both semesters – this makes up 2 out of the 6 subjects each semester • Students may choose a VCE or VET subject – these are taken for the whole year • All other subjects are chosen as electives and are semester based – except E.I.S

  17. YEAR 10 MATHS SELECTION • Students choose either:  General Mathematics  Mathematical Methods • Students may only select the following in consultation with their Maths teacher and the Middle School Coordinators:  Pathway Mathematics  Specialist Mathematics

  18. YEAR 10 ALP MATHS SELECTION • ALP students choose a Mathematics Subject from the following options:  Units 1&2 Mathematical Methods  Year 10 Specialist Maths Students and parents are encouraged to discuss this decision with their child's current Mathematics teacher

ELECTIVE SUBJECT SELECTION • Along with English and Maths, students must also choose a minimum of one subject from the following Key Learning Areas: SCIENCE PASE HUMANITIES THE ARTS Students will then have 3 units remaining. TECHNOLOGY These subjects can come from any KLA – up to a maximum of 3 from the same KLA

ELECTIVE SUBJECT SELECTION CONT. • IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE:  Students may not take more than 3 subjects from the one KLA e.g. cannot do 4 PASE subjects over the course of the year  There are also LOTE or English Electives available to choose from  Some subjects have extra costs associated with them – for example, VET, EIS, Technology subjects. Please make sure you are aware of these

VCE/ VET SUBJECT SELECTION • Students may choose to take one VCE or VET subject at Year 10 – they cannot do both • ALP students must select two VCE subjects OR one VCE and one VET subject- this will depend on their Mathematics selection • VCE & VET subjects run for the whole year and therefore count as 2 units (one each semester) If you choose one of these subjects, you are making a year long commitment, especially if you select VET

  22. EXCELLENCE IN SPORT PROGRAM • The EIS program allows students to combine their studies and intensive training in; • Basketball Australian Rules Football • Netball Tennis • In order to be selected for this program students need to complete:  An application- Forms on Compass – DUE Wednesday 2 nd August  A fitness test – will be held Friday 4 th August, 12pm – 1.30pm

VCE UNIT 1 AND 2 DANCE EXPRESSION OF INTEREST • We are currently taking expressions of interest, from next years, Year 10 students who may be interested in studying Units 1 and 2 Dance in 2018 • Danni Devine will be available in Room 7 immediately after this presentation to answer any questions you have about this subject and to provide more information about it

  24. HOW TO DECIDE WHICH SUBJECTS • Think about the following points: • What you are interested in? It is important to study subjects that you enjoy. • What will you do well in? • How does the subject fit in with your overall study or career goals?

  28. MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION TIMELINE • Course selection will be done online, using the students Compass login.  Online course selection opens Monday 31 st July  Online course selection closes Friday 11 th August

MIDDLE SCHOOL COURSE SELECTION TIMELINE • Once students have completed their online subject selection, they must print it off, get it signed by parents/guardians and then hand it in to the Middle School Office. • If you require any assistance with the online course selection, Daniel Toma and Liz Nevins will be available to meet with parents and students on Tuesday 8th August from 3.30pm – 5pm • please book an appointment through Lauren Kelso (Middle School Office)

  30. MAROONDAH CAREERS EXPO The Maroondah Careers Group Expo is on tomorrow night – Tuesday 1 st August: 3.30pm – 7.30pm Box Hill Institute, Lilydale Lakeside Campus

  32. WHAT’S NEXT TONIGHT? • Please take the time to explore all of the Key Learning Area displays. These can be found in the Arts Wing • The VET information session will begin immediately after this presentation in the Theatre • The Year 9, 2018 Athlete Development Program information session will begin in Room 11 after this presentation and will be followed by the Duke of Ed presentation • The Middle School Coordinators will move to the Supper Room after this presentation and they will be available to answer any questions you may have
