What this workshop is all about: ● Introduce to you a curriculum developed for Intermediate and Senior Personal Development Skills, along with Senior Literacy ● Our program has flourished over 1 year. We want to share it with you. ● We aren’t a perfect program yet...but we are working toward it!

By the end of this workshop, you should: ● Be starting to think about meaningful ways you can connect your class or VCAL program with community organisations ● Have some ideas as to how to integrate certain units and projects with different strands of VCAL ● Be familiar with the Intermediate/Senior PDS outcomes

  5. OUR VISION ● Promote civic engagement among students by fostering sustainable and meaningful community connections ● Re engaging students with their school - making meaningful for them ● Integrate subjects where possible (goal: full integration) ● Collaborate

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECTS: SENIOR Yearlong: MURAL ● Uniform shop was drab and ugly ● WRS/art teacher led senior students through the process of designing a mural ● Students were divided into groups and given responsibility for one wall ● The following images are the result of their hard work….

  20. SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECTS: SENIOR Yearlong: MURAL The VCAL students wanted to paint a rainbow to symbolize our school’s acceptance and celebration of people of all genders and sexual identities.

  22. SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECTS: SENIOR Yearlong: MURAL Students eventually ‘signed off' by writing their names and their graduation year on the uniform shop, so future students can put a name to their contribution

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECTS: SENIOR PDS & LITERACY SKILLS (INTEGRATED) Term 1: VCAL BIG DAY OUT PDS LEARNING OUTCOMES: ALL LITERACY: ORACY FOR KNOWLEDGE WE DO THIS IN THE FIRST COUPLE OF WEEKS OF TERM 1 IN PREPARATION FOR ORGANISING FUTURE EVENTS, THE SENIOR VCAL CLASS PLAN THE DAY FOR THE WHOLE OF VCAL IT IS ABOUT CREATING CONNECTIONS AMONG THE COHORT, AS WELL AS CELEBRATING THE DIFFERENT PATHWAY THEY HAVE CHOSEN

SENIOR PDS & LITERACY SKILLS (INTEGRATED) Term 1: TEACHING A SKILL TO THE YEAR 7S PDS LEARNING OUTCOMES: ALL LITERACY: ORACY FOR KNOWLEDGE, WRITING FOR KNOWLEDGE STUDENTS FORM SMALL GROUPS AND DECIDE ON A SKILL TO TEACH TO THE YEAR 7 COHORT THEY ARE IN CHARGE OF THE SESSION AND HAVE TO RUN IT TWICE IN ONE AFTERNOON THEY HAVE TO PLAN THE WORKSHOP , ORGANISE RESOURCES NEEDED TO RUN IT AS WELL AS CONDUCT AN EVALUATION AFTERWARDS THEY THEN HAVE TO COMPLETE A PRESENTATION ON THEIR WORKSHOP TO PRESENT TO THE CLASS IN THE FORM OF A POWERPOINT INCLUDING PHOTOS, SURVEYS AND THEIR OWN REFLECTIONS

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECTS: SENIOR PDS & LITERACY SKILLS (INTEGRATED) Term 2: HEALTH AND WELLBEING DAY LEARNING OUTCOMES: ALL Literacy: Oracy and Writing for Practical Purposes, Writing for Knowlwdge Students (in groups) choose a health issue they are passionate about to focus on They choose an organisation who deals with that issue and they make contact with them They then run an awareness and fundraising campaign at school

Term 3: ABERFELDIE MENTORING PROJECT LEARNING OUTCOMES: ALL STUDENTS PREPARED SESSIONS FOR THE GRADE 5 AND 6’S AT ABERFELDIE PRIMARY SCHOOL THESE SESSIONS WERE FOCUSED ON BULLYING, TEAMWORK, BEING INCLUSIVE/MAKING FRIENDS AND CONCERNS ABOUT HIGH SCHOOL

  32. Mentoring Project - Continued FOR THE FINAL SESSION IT WAS REWARDING FOR OUR STUDENTS AND THE PRIMARY THE ABERFELDIE STUDENTS SCHOOL CHILDREN LOVED THEIR BIG BUDDIES. CAME TO BUCKLEY PARK COLLEGE WHERE OUR VCAL STUDENTS ORGANISED A SCHOOL TOUR, GAMES & A SAUSAGE SIZZLE

SCHOOL & COMMUNITY PROJECTS: SENIOR PDS & LITERACY SKILLS (INTEGRATED) Term 3/4: DOMESTIC VIOLENCE/ VIOLENCE AGAINST WOMEN PROJECT WE DECIDED TO CHOOSE AN ISSUE THAT WAS A CONCERN WITHIN OUR COMMUNITY STUDENTS STUDIED A RANGE OF VIDEOS AND STATISTICS RELATED TO THIS ISSUE AND WERE ASKED TO MAKE SOME OBSERVATIONS FROM THESE THEY ORGANISED FOR A SPEAKER TO COME TO THE SCHOOL AND ADDRESS THE YEAR 10 COHORT, AS A WAY OF RAISING AWARENESS JESSE, FROM REKIAH’S LAW CAME AND SPOKE AND IT WAS EXTREMELY
