Tips for Year 2 Parents Talk! • Ask your child to summarise what they have been reading- main points, full sentences, not every detail • Words!- meaning, power, similarities, phonics, rhyme • Punctuation- what it means, why it is used • Model expression • Compare with previous books and authors • Compare with experiences you have had. • Laugh and enjoy a book together • Ask open ended questions

Tips for Year 2 Parents Higher Order Thinking Skills 1.What did Goldilocks do in the 3 bears house? (knowledge) 2. Why did Goldilocks like the little bear’s chair? (comprehension) 3. In what ways are the three bears like people? (analysis) 4. What do you think Goldilocks could have done to make friends with the bears? What would you do if she came in to your house? (application)
Tips for Year 2 Parents 5. How would the story be different if it were Goldilocks and the three fish? Make up a story about Goldilocks and the three bad beauties. (synthesis) 6. Was Goldilocks good or bad? Why do you think that? (evaluation)
Tips for year 2 parents Vocabulary to use and explain in talking about words, sentences, texts, punctuation: • Noun, noun phrase • Adjective • Verb • Adverb • Tense- Past, Present • Apostrophe (Contractions and Possessive) • Suffix (-ment, -ful, -less, -ly)
Tips for Year 2 Parents Strategies • Reading on to the end of a sentence or back to the beginning • Look for words within words • Ask “Does that make sense?” • Use phonics sometimes - NOT every word! • Develop and encourage self- correction

Talk about your reading • Keep it a regular habit- daily or 5X per week at least • Read together- even if your child is a capable independent reader • Read aloud • Find a comfortable, quiet place- no distraction • Explain strategies- NOT always phonics! • Talk about the book…Open Ended questioning Inference, Prediction • Ask your child to summarise • Continue to read TO your child regularly
